1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Okay, this is the first time since I started my newsletter in 2003 that I have been late with it. Since it is so late, I am combing both November and December.
After the concerns about the fires in September and October I moved into boot camp—and am happy to say I survived both the fires and the boot camp--which was a success--both the dogs and I survived!
If you missed the journal covering the whole month’s adventures, you can access it in the October and November archives at http://www.arkanimals.com/ark_animal_answers.html
In December I am scheduled to give a class on animal disaster preparedness via a teleseminar with Patricia Reszetylo. If you would like to participate sign up via the link below in the events section.
Patricia is also doing a course with Linda Tellington-Jones (founder of the T-Touch program) and the sign up is below as well…the good news is that both courses are being offered to you at no charge.
Next year is already gearing up. I’ve renewed my passport for a trip to Spain where I’ll be an instructor for a course teaching people how to train and will be attending several different events. If you know someone who is looking for a speaker--I am booking 2008-2009 now.
During this time of year I begin my writing projects and hunker down with those. I have some interesting projects I hope to complete in the next six months.
If you have been a podcast fan, my podcast glitch has been fixed—just look for Ark Animal Answers at iTunes!
Have a great holiday season, thanks for your continued support, and I’ll be in touch next year.

2. Discussion for the Month
====================================================
I’ve been receiving questions about animal careers and as I morph arkanimals.com and my business into a new direction you’ll be glad to know that you will find more content about careers with animals and some of the other topics I seem to have drifted away from temporarily.
I decided to put the Animal Career Secrets on hold and back onto my main website of arkanimals.com—hate making more work for myself but I was attempting to follow the requests of a course I am in.
Once again I have to configure the website so that it is easier to navigate. Some of you have said it is too overwhelming—let me just say it is for me too because it has hundreds of pages _without_ the blog.
If you are interested in an animal career the first thing to do is to begin reading my series, Unusual Animal Careers. You can reach the index directly at http://www.arkanimals.com/ark/uac_index.html
You’ll find a bunch of direction in the series and a few specialty areas of careers already covered. I have some new content to share with you so look for it on a regular basis again.
Also, we will be moving the blog to the main index page for easier access. Most of the new content will now be posted on the blog instead of on the tradition site—probably shortly before the New Year.
You’ll begin to see those questions being answered. Each time there is an update you will be notified and have the option of clicking directly in from the email link. The RSS subscription directions will be up and running soon if you prefer to use a reader…don’t panic if you don’t understand—I’ll have it all spelled out for you if you want to try that option.
Have a question? Drop me a line for the next issue.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
People always ask about different pet professionals and other programs. The best thing to do is explore and find out what works the best for you. I know I took T-Touch course from a practitioner and wasn’t too impressed but I know others who are thrilled with the methods.
One of my colleagues, who is a world famous animal communicator, said that the difference is Linda herself. So, this month you’ll have a rare opportunity to join Linda Tellington Jones the founder of T-Touch on a teleseminar at no charge—my compliments.
I am not conducting the course but thought you would like it. The class will be geared to horse owners but it should be great.
Mark your calendars for November 28, 2007 at 5:00pm Pacfic Time. To enroll just click here ==> http://www.1automationwiz.com/app/?Clk=2169074

4. Schedule of Upcoming Events & Appearances
====================================================
Well, fall and winter means it is time to write and the only thing I have scheduled at the moment is the December 19th Class. Things change pretty fast around here and you can check my calendar directly here to make sure you don’t miss anything in the future: http://dianalguerrero.com
If you would like an animal behavior or training appointment just call (800) 818-7387 or you can book an appointment online. Don't forget that I also do phone consultations.
I hope you took advantage of the free class I posted since it is no longer available. However, our teleclasses are recorded. If you missed the free one—don’t fret—many will be for sale online shortly.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Wow, October is already here along with weather changes. Can you believe that the end of the year is just around the corner?
Despite my best intentions, last month my goal to achieve balance went right out the window as the last two weeks of September proved hectic but rewarding.
Media earlier this month include appearance of the Today Show and Countdown with Keith Olberman. I did attempt to reach you right after we filmed the segment—it aired early the next day. I’ve had calls from some other shows and anticipate some more segments in the near future.
Sadly, Steve Irwin died early in September after a fatal bard stab by a large stingray. This incident just highlights how important it is to not take any animal for granted. Animals have teeth, claws, spines, horns, barbs, and other defense mechanisms. The incident is a reminder that no matter how innocuous animals seem, they can always pose a threat.
Not too long ago I traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend SuperZoo. This industry tradeshow highlights the newest in pet products. Groomers, pet retailers, manufacturers, and pet professionals from all over the world gather in one place.
Connecting with old friends was great. My favorite events were the private party held at the top of Mandalay Bay Hotel in the House of Blues Foundation room. The view from the top of the hotel was fabulous.
What really took me back to the early days of my career was the visit to Shark Reef, an aquarium at the Mandalay Bay featuring a variety of aquatic predators. My career path has been complex and I’ve done a lot of things—some of you may not know that I started my career as a marine naturalist and whale watch narrator. The visit to Shark Reef sparked a bunch of memories.
At SuperZoo the grooming contest always is spectacular. My favorite competitor this year creatively trimmed and colored, “dragon dogs.” I only saw the finale this year but it was fun.
Oh! My new book cover is done and you can take a look at it and the cover copy at http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!

2. Discussion for the Month
====================================================
Last month I asked if you knew what percentages of lost pets actually make it back home. Sadly only between 10-15% of those animals make are returned. Did you know that of all the Hurricane Katrina animals lost that only 15% have been returned to date?
I mention this because simple steps can help get your pet back to you if it gets lost. The best solution is to make sure your pets always have ID Tags on their collars—even if they are indoor only critters. During travel, tags should also include the numbers of friends or your cell phone. Local registration with animal control is a must--and useful to those finding your pet.
In addition to physical tags, it also helps to have your pet microchipped. The implantation can be done by veterinarians or animal shelters. The small chip is injected under the skin on the neck. You’ll want a universal chip that can be picked up by most scanners. If a pet is lost, the rice sized ID can be picked up by scanning devices at the shelter or animal services facility.
My question for you this month is” Will your pet be celebrating Howl-o-Ween or Yowl-o-Ween with you? I’d love to see some pictures!
I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
The American Pet Products and Manufacturers Association states that over 3.7 million dog owners purchase gifts or costumes for pets specifically for Halloween festivities. These beastly celebrations are becoming mainstream and pet friendly Halloween parties and parades are a just part of a larger big trend.
Today pet families include their dogs in ‘Howl-o-ween’ celebrations and cats participate in ‘Yowl-o-ween’ events. Not too long ago there were only a half a dozen pet costumes available. Today Rubie’s Costumes of New York, the world’s largest costume manufacturer, has a pet collection that offers over 40 different designs.
Halloween can be a frightening and risky holiday for pets but Halloween celebrations can be safe and fun for pets if people are prepared. There are choices today that didn’t exist ten years ago.
Although some pets might like to dress up and participate in events, many more have adverse reactions. Pets can get very frightened by costumes and other unusual activities surrounding the Halloween celebrations. Constant door knocking, bell ringing, and unusual appearing guests can stress pets or spook them. This can contribute to escape or aggression. Need some Halloween Pet Safety Tips?
-Keep animals confined on Halloween. Seclude them safely in a room away from the door and distractions.
-Walk pets before dark to avoid any altercations with costumed characters.
-House animals indoors just before and during Halloween. This protects pets from pranksters who tease, injure, steal, or kill animals.
-Make sure pets are wearing current identification. Many pets get spooked and escape. Unfortunately they end up in shelters without identification.
-Keep pets away from costumed ghouls and goblins. Halloween bites are not uncommon. Even friendly animals may bite due to stress, fear, or protective aggression.
-Store and dispense candy so that it is not accessible to pets. Many treats are toxic and even lethal to pets.
-Avoid the liability that comes from dressing up your pet and sending the critter out trick-or-treating with kids.
-Don't dress up pets unless they love it. If you do dress them up make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. Avoid restriction of movement, vision, hearing or the ability to breathe or vocalize. Costumes should not contain small dangling accessories that could be consumed or cause choking.
-Restrict your pet's access to decorations. Jack o'lanterns with candles are obvious fire hazards, but cats can also get tangled in streamers. Pets can also become ill from eating holiday decor.
Halloween can be fun for all members of your family but avoid scary stories by using pet precautions—and make it a Happy Howl-o-ween instead of a ghoulish experience for pets!

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
First, thanks for doing the rain dances. I say so because last week we finally received some rainfall. I lamented for most of the first week because it rained all around my home until two days ago. Coincidentally this happened after I wrote a friend (who lives here part-time) whining about that fact.
I’ve been running up and down the mountain weekly which wears me out. This has been good and bad. Good because I get out of here into the world and also to the mineral springs for a short stop for R&R. Bad because I am having a tune-up and feel less energetic than normal.
Animal training has kept me really busy. I hope you joined me for the telewebcast but if you did not have a chance to attend live, you can still can listen in—just scroll down for the link in the calendar section. I am going to invite you to one more free course and then begin the monthly subscription program and downloads from the shopping cart.
I did sent out an announcement for the interview on Animal Tails Radio from Chicago’s WGNU. It was a hoot and the hosts got a kick out of the key to pronouncing my last name, Grrrrrr-rare-o. Needless to say, it got a bit out of hand. They should have it up on the podcast but promise to send me the audio and I’ll post it for you if they do.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
The big buzz this last week was about Hurricane Katrina’s animal victims. I think I touched on his before but in case you missed it--only about 15% of the animals lost during that disaster have found their way back home.
There have been a few dogfights between humans over custody of the animals. The buzz this week was because of a custody battle over a dog who now lives in Santa Monica. The arguments I have seen discuss how the dog was not cared for by his former owner and that he should not be returned because of that.
My thoughts, having worked in disaster rescue, are that a judgment about what is a good owner and what is not is a matter of perspective. Katrina hit many poor areas where the status quo is not providing jeweled collars or an annual health care for the animals at the local veterinarian.
Many of the people lost their homes that were passed down to them and were just scraping by. Pets are part of the family but not top priority. The quality of pet care has a lot to do with lack of affluence and community status quo.
In “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality” I wrote about one hard hit family that I helped retrieve their pets during the aftermath of Hurricane Georges. The lady arrived in a car that barely ran, without shoes, and looking very worse for wear.
She was frantic about her pets who were stranded in the upstairs of their home. I followed her to the location with two large crates for the dogs and watched as neighbors handed her the dogs that they had helped swim the dogs to shore just before we arrived. The dogs did not have tags and probably had not seen a vet in a year or two—if at all. Even so, they were clearly loved.
The other people nearby had also managed to get a boat over to the house to grab the cats. The felines were caught put into her car while the dogs had to be loaded into the crates by the owners--because they were so fierce.
One of the team members was pretty judgmental over the looks and situation surrounding those pet owners and their pets but what I saw was someone who couldn’t sleep or rest until her animals were safely in the care of our team and the local veterinarian.
In times of disaster there is no time to pass judgment on a person’s situation or choices. Many of Katrina’s victims still remain in the most dire of straits—so is it wrong or right to keep the animal victims in the new homes? Read the stories and let me know what you think:

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
During my career I have transitioned several times and so this new reassessment is nothing new. Beginning in October I will again be taking animals in for training and working with a local Doggie Bed & Breakfast who will keep the critters for me.
I’ll be working intensively with a select few animals and then working with their owners once a week. This is directly in opposition to my work training owners to train their animals on a weekly basis but I have to say I love training animals and seeing the results. Training owners to train is very laborious, and although rewarding, is not my passion.
Boot camp is intense and involves taking the animals into a variety of environments and teaching them how to learn, how to behave, and training basic obedience and manners. The two scheduled to arrive in early October don’t know how to think.
People believe that all animals “get” training but that is not necessarily true. Genetics, exposure, and upbringing can throw barriers into the learning process. These two cannot focus and are related to each other. That is not great for the owners because sibling animals tend to bond more with each other instead of the family or owners.
The owners inherited them and are dedicated to getting them to integrate. When I first walked into the yard I was shocked. It looked like a war zone. The animals were also wild and never settled down into the training process unless separated one on one.
Also, they have no food drive. Although food treats are not necessary to train animals, tidbits can be a good tool to shorten up the learning curve and increase motivation. I nicknamed the two delinquents the dastardly duo—for good reason.
Anyway, I have worked with them twice with their owners and they are making some progress but it takes them about twenty times the time to learn what normal animals get immediately.
This week I am having the owner train them to learn what a clicker is. The idea is that one click gets one treat. I am not going to get into the training theory or discussion but the clicker ends of working as an IOU.
Most animals get the clicker association in about 20 clicks but not these guys. Anyway, once that is established it will help make my job a bit easier. So cross your fingers. Dogs usually go to boot camp with me for two weeks but I extended my training offer to them for up to four weeks because I think I am in for a challenge. Hope I am wrong, but hope I am right.
Yeah, yeah, I love a challenge—just not when I am in the middle of it!
If you don’t understand the difference between training methods be sure to listen to the audio I have online (Introduction to Animal Behavior & Training) and available or a limited time from the link in the calendar section.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
The weather here in the mountains has been odd. We had a really hot spell and it doesn’t look like this trend is going away anytime soon. I love the thunderstorms that roll into the valley and then move out—just not the lightening, which we have experienced little.
Despite the promise of rain, we have received almost nothing. The weather can be totally different between one side and another. Last week, I left my home to drive to another little town. Upon my arrival many of the locals asked me about the torrential down pour…what torrential downpour? It seems that one area of the valley got a good showering.
I was out training an aggressive dog and we got drenched but the rain dissipated quickly and when I left the appointment, the surrounding areas were dry and unfortunately, the valley where I live is very dry and the lake is evaporating quickly. It boggles my mind that people still insist on growing grass and not changing their habits.
Wildlife is migrating into populated areas to obtain water. Sightings of predators and other animals are up. Road incidents between cars and animals have even made the local paper.
So, do a rain dance, pray for rain (in moderation), and do what you can to conserve, recycle, and reuse.
Finally, I have been swamped because I am revamping my business. I’ll make a more formal announcement in the future but here is one new project: http://www.animalcareersecrets.com
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Thanks to those of you who are submitting questions. Here is one that came in from the Big Bear, California area: Is it more difficult to train an older dog?
It depends. In traditional training, most trainers prefer to start dogs after they are about six months of age. This is for a few reasons. Dogs that are older have a better attention span, these dogs are usually settled into the household and have completed their vaccination schedule. The animals are usually neutered by this time as well.
In my view, that is an older dog and I prefer to start training pets the moment they arrive in the new home for a multitude of reasons which I'll get into in a minute.
Dogs that are older have established patterns of behavior and many behavior problems are really solidly entrenched. Having said that, you really can train an old dog new tricks--but you often have to untrain bad habits and retrain the owners...which is the hard part!
The oldest dog I remember having in one of my group programs was a Bassett hound at the ripe age of 12 years! She learned but moved in slow motion--as any species ages the reflexes and responses slow down. It took her a bit longer to process things and she moved in slower motion than her classmates but she still learned and it was a pleasure to have the whole family participate and to illustrate that it is never too late to get good behavior or to train basic manners or obedience.
Personally, I think every animal should be enrolled in school because it is mentally stimulating and teaches them the rules for successful living in a human environment. Plus, good manners allows animals to experience a fuller life--one with travel, dog and human friends, and a variety of environmental enrichment opportunities.
This year I have focused on teach Pet Parenting courses. Puppy training is easier in most instances but harder because puppies have the attention span of a gnat. So the training is vastly different than working with an adolescent or older animal.
However the perks in training a young animal is that it is very positive and nips the behavior problems in the bud (no pun intended...) and so life within the household is pleasurable instead of a pain.
In early pet parenting classes the young critters learn not to nip, to chew only on appropriate items, house training and toileting is not a problem that ruins the carpet or flooring, and other behavior such as jumping, excessive barking, not coming when called, or dashing through doors or gates just don't become issues--because the young animal learns what is required.
So, you can train an older dog but the only reason it is difficult is because you have to retrain owners (who have to practice those changes for 30-60 day to form new habits) and extinguish bad behavior.
It is a matter of perspective--personally my answer is no--but I've been training a long, long time. For you, the answer is probably yes...but give it a shot, the results are worth it!
Have a question? Drop me a line for the next issue.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
In late July I accompanied a bunch of animal lovers to visit a wildlife sanctuary, one that does rehabilitation but that also provides educational programs to the public using animals that cannot be released due to permanent injuries or habituation to humans (in some cases, imprinting).
Upon entry, things looked good, the place was clean, the enclosures secure, and the volunteers were hardworking and caring people--but during the course of the afternoon I became more and more mortified.
Good grief—here they were preaching that wild animals don’t make good pets and then entering into the enclosures and acting like they were pets—colorful leashes, toys, and other trends of behavior interactions. Don’t get me wrong, enrichment and stimulation is good but it was HOW they did it.
The birds of prey were allowed to grab with their beaks and one was cuddled like a stuffed animal. A young wild canine was allowed to jump and ricochet off of the body of the “handler” an allowed to nip and grab food from her hands.
Worse were my observations of the animals getting more and more agitated while the humans didn’t really notice. About three minutes before a minor incident in the bear enclosure—which was fortunately mitigated—I could see the issue escalating again.
Then I watched as another volunteer allowed a small wild cat to escalate in his behavior to the point of biting AND actually allowing it. I saw the big bruise on her upper arm from a bite during the previous day and suspect it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.
Did I mention I used to be the president and active worker at a wildlife care and rehabilitation center? What I witnessed made me cringe.
My point here is that the interactions with the animals overshadowed their message of why wildlife don’t make good pets. I was disappointed that they didn’t really talk about their rehabilitation work or what is involved in it.
Not all animal handlers and workers are versed in animal training and safety...which is why you see the news filled with captive wildlife incidents. Although I believe that creating an interest and showing that animals can amiable to humans, my concerns are over how it is done.
What do you think when you witness animal interactions?

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Gosh, can you believe it is now July? Amazing. The weather here is hot, hot, hot and I am busy with some new projects but it is too early to reveal any details yet. Needless to say I made more work for myself but this should be a good learning curve to cut down on the work load in the future.
New York was fabulous. If you have not taken a look at the photos visit the blog at http://www/blessingoftheanimals.com for the pics and short summary.
On the flip side, I lost a beloved family member and heard about it right upon my return. I’ve been having a tough time of it…being busy helps me avoid dealing with it but when I stop—sheesh. Anyway, my students told me to take some time off so I am.
Puppy school is just about the most fun I have. They are so goofy! I have some great clients who are working really hard. In case you don’t know, puppies have no attention span. Training is easier in some ways but harder in others--but I am not going to get into that at the moment.
I am going to convert this newsletter into html format soon. This is an alert to those of you who signed up on Author’s Den—I am going to move you onto a new system. If you do not want to be on that list, do nothing. Otherwise you’ll have to click on a link to move over to the new list. I’ve had reports of a few glitches so bear with me.
The new list is going to better since I can easily get you special announcements and insider information and target the different interests of everyone. Some people want blessing of the animals info, others training, career, or writing. It is taking a while to sort out but I am almost getting it.
Be sure to read my tips and hints below for the 4th of July. Have a great holiday and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
The concern this month has been about noise phobia and the 4th of July.
The 4th of July increases the risks for pets and is especially horrible for those animals with noise phobia. The following article is one I did and hope you find useful.
Does your pet cower, quiver, behave frantically or become destructive in response to noise? Behavior problems triggered by fireworks, garbage trucks, and thunderstorms are noise phobias. Pets suffering from phobias need behavior modification. If the holiday or event is right around the corner you’ll find some tips and hints to help you in the short-term.
Many pets respond to noise phobia differently, in addition to the reactions listed above, some critters hide under furniture but all negative responses come from certain triggers. During the Fourth of July it is the noise from holiday fireworks. Pet may become live versions of Velcro--and stick closely to their owners.
Many pet owners want to ‘comfort’ their pet, but although this is done with good intentions, it can actually reinforce the fear and panic. This "training by accident" often escalates pet problems so pet owners should only verbally reassure their pets. Pet owners should avoid cuddling, petting, holding, and trying to physically relieve the stress.
The age of your pet, socialization, experience, and breed can also influence their reactions. Animals with an established history of problems will likely worsen. Elderly animals may get better simply because they lose their hearing.
Animals are fine-tuned for survival and their senses are distinctly more acute than humans. Smells, rumbles and sudden bursts of light can illicit escalated reactions in pets. They are more sensitive to their environment than humans.
There are ways to work through noise phobia exhibited before earthquakes, during thunderstorms and throughout firework displays, but it takes time and preplanning. In the meantime use some quick tips and tools to address the problem behavior, which escalates annually during the Fourth of July holiday.
Emergency tips for July 4th noise phobia in pets:
Keep your animals inside during July 4th and for a few days to a week prior to the holiday.
Make sure you have a tag with current information on your pet during this time.
If you take your animal outside for toileting or any other activity, make sure they are under physical restraint via a collar and leash.
Leave your pets safely at home instead of taking them to picnics or other holiday events.
Play music or turn on a radio station with soothing music to help mask outside noises.
Buy a plug-in Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) dispenser. This permeates the air with a calming scent and reduces fear and anxiety.
Keep your pet busy with activities or chew items before the height of noise making occurs.
There are some other strategies you can use. For instance, visit your veterinary medical professional and ask for melatonin. This oral neuro-hormone often provides help for sensitive animals. Use with the veterinarian’s dosage recommendation and don’t try to do it yourself.
Flower remedies work on an energetic level. Five Flower® or Rescue Remedy® mixes may help reduce your pet’s anxiety.
Create a safe haven. If your animal is habituated to a crate you may want to provide access for security. Other options include the bathroom, laundry room, garage, basement, or any other den area. The room to choose is one where there are no windows to jump through, or where windows can be blocked off and are too high and narrow to access.
Some animals want to hide and will feel safe in a favorite spot, like under the bed. You can create sleeping bag tunnel or similar option for them.
Plan a party and play instead of participating in other events. Making new traditions can be fun and helpful for your pet.
Consider boarding your pet at a professional kennel for the holiday.
Pet owners should always check with their veterinarian or behavior specialist before using any drugs or tranquilizers. They should also watch guests--since an open door can provide an opportunity for animals to bolt outside.
Finally, use simple steps to get your pet through the crisis. If your pet has noise phobia problems you should start your behavior modification problem right after this holiday. Don’t delay.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
Although I work with a lot of different clients, it is the ones who work the hardest and the toughest cases that are most rewarding. This month I’ve had three clients totally reverse unlivable and intolerable situations into amiable relationships. Of those, one of my aggression cases has moved to the next level.
In my opinion, you never get rid of aggression—you just manage it. So, it requires 100% compliance to the program and diligence for the remaining lifetime.
Over the last two weeks the “double trouble” case has met in public areas with people and dogs of all types around us. Some of my other students helped out by bringing their animals down for desensitization, while others also dropped by to help one of the dogs get over her fear and defensive aggression reaction to new people.
It makes my heart happy to see the progress. There are few things that are as rewarding to an animal professional.
So, if you are working wit your animals—keep doing what your trainer and/or behaviorist outlines and you’ll see the results.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Can you believe it is already June? This month is filled with new classes and the start of my virtual book tour. Thanks for your nice comments and support. It makes life fun and fulfilling when people take the time to write or give comments about how life changing the books or animal training classes are to them.
On that note, the puppy preschool classes and puppy club are just about the best programs I have ever done. My goal is to get people to start their animals off on the right paw really early. It is so much easier in the long run.
I am getting this out to you a little bit early as I head out to New York today and won’t be back until after the 5th. My new chapeau is finished (I’ll have photos up on http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com when I return) and today I’ll be running around finishing errands before heading out for the perpetual travel day.
Although I love living in the mountains, travel can be a hardship. It is about two hours to the nearest airport and then the only flight out leaves at 1am. Yikes! At least I am getting in a day early.
New York is a big contrast to my living environment here in a small rural town on the edge of the National Forest and above a lake. Even so, I find the energy and activities of the city life stimulating and enjoy networking with other authors, publishers, and book sellers.
When I get back I will be working hard on some new projects. One of which I need your help on. Let me know if you have a favorite animal or book blog as I am going to start reaching out in a virtual tour. Also, I’d love to do a living room book club tour through southern California. So, contact your favorite bloggers and let me know who they are.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Question: When should you start a pet into training? Some say to wait until six months but I see you are doing classes with puppies as young as eight weeks old.
Great question since there is a misconception that you should wait to start training an animal until they are in adolescence. For dogs, this is about six months of age. The rumor still circulating in the general population is a big disservice to anyone who gets a young animal because learning is an ongoing effort. Would you wait to start teaching a child or would you start teaching right from wrong, what is off limits, and what is appropriate behavior early?
Just like young children, animals need guidelines and coaching from the minute they have awareness. Environmental stimulation, mental activity, basic coaching, and socialization are critical to getting good behavior from an animal. These efforts start the moment the animal arrives into the home.
Due to the risk of disease, and because a dog older than six months is easier to train (they have an attention span), the tradition has been to wait. However, new discoveries show that pets should enter into preliminary socialization and other activities early.
The other secret is that puppies, although easier to train, have no attention spans and so the training is more challenging. Kittens have been virtually ignored, except for animal actors, until the last 10-15 years. Birds have been overlooked as well. A well rounded and socialized animal is usually better behaved.
Puppies should begin home training immediately. The puppy groups are open to those puppies who have had several inoculations and veterinarians usually have their guidelines as to when the risk of exposure to disease outweighs the benefits of proper socialization and schooling. This is changing but some are still adamant about not participating until the series of shots is done.
To avoid aggression and other puppy challenges I believe the early schooling is vital to the mental health of both the animal and the humans! If you have any worries, start with private and then move your critter into a group.
Have a question? Drop me a line for the next issue.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
The canine club and puppy club activities have been a riot. Dogs of all ages and sizes have been turning out for the socialization group. The training pen is such a positive place that I have dubbed it the “party pen.”
Dogs who are now in class seem to sulk that they cannot play with their buddies during school. However, we usually have the club after class so they can romp and wear themselves out.
Due to the influx of smaller breeds we are going to break the club into three groups—the new one will be for small dogs. If you have not made it to the puppy club—be sure to check it out. We all have a blast.
On that note, I do not usually recommend dog parks any more. They are not moderated and many dogs are not under the control of their owner. Incidents of fights and even a few fatal altercations have occurred. So, if you live in an area that has day care facilities or moderated social sessions I’d encourage you to participate in those rather than the expose your pet to the risks in a “dog park gone wild.”

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Wow is time ever flying by quickly. Can you believe that we are already in May? The ”Blessing of the Animals book” tour has kept me busy and has been fun. Unlike my last book tour with “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality,” I am only doing local book events with the exception of a few events such as the LA Festival of Books and Book Expo America in New York.
The really fun part of this is that animals are coming to all the events. If you are not reading the book blog, stop by and take a gander to get all the news and see the snaps. http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com/blog_book_buzz.html
The highlights for April included being the guest of Olvera Street’s annual blessing of the animals. Cardinal Mahony got a bit out of control with the holy water--you can listen to that story along with a live pet blessing in the extensive interview with Val Heart (online at the book blog). We covered everything from pet blessing to contemporary ceremonies, animal training, pet parenting and lots more. Most everyone enjoyed the stories and it was a listener that requested the live blessing.
On that note, I’ve received a few calls to do pet blessings and other appearances and so will probably head down that path. Many people don’t know that I am an animal officiate--the cat is out of the bag now!
Anyway, I’d like to do a living room tour—so if you are a book club member or the staff or volunteer at an animal facility mention this option. For the moment I will be sticking to California.
Also, if you are in the New York area and have a favorite pet boutique or store, let me know about it. We are currently contacting businesses in the area for pet blessings!
Finally, my pal (and former member of the Alliance of Writers) has just had her first book published. I hope you will take a look and buy at “Sail into Your Dreams: 8 Steps to Living a More Purposeful Life.”
Karen is throwing her book party up here in Big Bear in June--so if you are in the area plan on attending.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
We had a great question during the teleseminar about animal blessings. Do you need any specific credentials to conduct a pet blessing?
The answer depends on the tradition you come from. Most pet blessing events are officiated by a rabbinical leader or ordained member of the clergy. Today pet officiate training is offered to clergy—it is a new phenomena.
However, my personal belief is that anyone can ask for a blessing and many people pray or utter blessings for a variety of things on a daily basis. Most think of blessing food, asking for restoration of health, or praying for a safe trip, but affirmations and other such practices are common throughout different communities and are in alignment with the same intention of asking for a blessing.
“Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Creatures” was written so people could conduct their own blessings and ceremonies AND so that clergy and other groups could have a handbook to assist them in conducting events celebrating our animal brethren.
One teleseminar participant reported that when the event ended, she went right over and conducted a pet blessing with her pets. So, don’t be shy about it. If your pet is a blessing—celebrate it!
Have a question? Drop me a line for the next issue.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
I’ve enjoyed all the critters that have been showing up at the Blessing of the Animals book tour. The visitors have mostly been from the canine clan but the variety has included both large and small.
Olvera Street and the Haute Dog Parade were both a hoot. I took tons of pictures but have been editing them and it is taking longer than it should to get those together to post online. This is a good lesson for me to not promise to get the pics up so quickly!
The Eastside Book Café event was a blast as about 20 members of Mountain Social Links showed up to support the book signing and to sample the great coffee drinks. I heard they are planning another event for this weekend’s Cinco de Mayo signing at McCabe’s Bookstore in Crestline and am looking forward to it.
I am also looking forward to meeting the new kitty supervisor—BeBe. If you knew Sam he finally passed on about a year ago. Word has it that BeBe has brought her own flair to the shop.
During my travels my pal Carol Gurney arranged a picnic at the Windy Hill Ranch in Thousand Oaks, California. Wow, what a great facility. Not only do they take stellar care of their animals but they also take care of their 35 full time staff members who live there.
In addition to providing educational programming for city kids, they also have a state of the art facility for horse training—Olympic style. Every animal is well cared for and well adjusted.
I wrote about this briefly on the blog. The facility has also hired people from the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC). They are a very happy group that comes onto the ranch and works at helping around the place.
They are getting ready to conduct a fundraiser at the Ventura County Fair and gifted me with a great bird nest ball. They took whiffle balls, decorated them, and then filled them with Alpaca hair from the ranch.
I have to hang mine up—and when I do I will post the photo--anyway they will be selling them for $3.50 donation or more. Go take a look at the pictures of the ranch and farm at the blog. I am sure you can email them to order some: http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com
On the last trip I also got to be the guest at one of Carol Gurney’s workshops. People from all over turn up to be trained by her. She is one of the premiere animal communicators and we had a great time in the class. You can learn more about her at http://www.animalcommunicator.net

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Well, today is the day! No April Fools joke—Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Animals (ISBN 1402729677) has hit the shelves of booksellers across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom!
Things have been busy on my end with promotions and setting up events. I was able to do a live St Patrick’s Day blessing on a syndicated radio show from Dallas, Texas. The audio will be up shortly.
Those of you with pets have probably been really alarmed at the pet food recall issue. I’ll talk about this and more in this issue.
Don’t miss the teleseminar session with animal communicator, Val Heart. I’ll send out details once they become available.
I hope to see you during my book tour or in the new pet classes in the mountains of San Bernardino, California. There are some other good things brewing but I can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet—stay tuned.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
The pet food recall has killed many animals—and many of us suspect more than have been reported. Why are the numbers so low? Because unless the deaths can be substantiated, they cannot be definitely proven, and nobody is going to rush out and claim responsibility to large numbers of animal deaths.
The scientific view means things have to be proved conclusively. Common sense or anecdotal accounts are often dismissed because they have not been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt.
The tragedy is that Menu Foods allegedly knew about the problem before it surfaced AND allegedly knew that there was a problem when they tested the theory on live animals—who died.
Any food poses a risk. This is why food handling safety is so critical. Hazards arise whether you feed wet, dry, commercial, raw, or a combination of any of the above.
I suspect this latest tragedy will further push people over to US manufactured foods of smaller specialty companies. The cost factors might be more but aren’t your animals priceless?
Locally, many new customers have visited the pet stores—leaving the grocery stores and making the leap to the pet specialty market. One store here only carries one product with gluten because they decided to move away from counter-intuitive foods. Yes, dogs and cats are carnivores and the owners made the change when they bought the store a year ago.
My belief is that more and more people will tire of the big box stores, overseas contracts (slave labor hiring) and foreign manufacturing. People seem to be seeking out the personal service and quality that has been abandoned. We have become a throw away society and that does not serve the health of our families, pets, or the environment.
If you are concerned about the pet food recall I would suggest you visit the following information pages. I do have links up on the blog at www.arkanimals.com but since I have been so swamped have relied on fellow columnists who have devoted their time and resources to the issue. The team at the Pet Connection has done a fabulous job:

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
This month is full of pet blessings, parades, and parties. If you have the time, on April 7th visit Olvera Street in Los Angeles for the Annual Blessing of the Animals. The festivities go on throughout the day but the main event is always after 2pm. It is a great time! I’ll be a guest of the merchants and there the whole day. I will probably be wearing my festive “Easter Safari Bonnet” so keep an eye out.
While down in Los Angeles I will also be heading over for the Haute Dog parade on Easter Sunday (April 8th). I talked briefly with Justin Rudd this week. Mostly I will be there to snap photos for an article and the website but really I want to meet the beautiful bulldog Rosie. That event will be at Livingston Park in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach.
Finally, I have not been able to attend the America’s Family Pet Show in Costa Mesa in a while but I am going to attempt to make it on Friday, April 13th. No guarantee that this will happen but it is one of the largest public animal events in southern California. The actual event will run for three days. Cesar Milan, Warren Eckstein and Fred Bergendorff are some of the human animals that will be on exhibit.
Join the fun!

====================================================
Wow, did winter suddenly hit! We’ve had some great snow storms but I caught a nasty virus with me and so was snuggled warmly in bed so that I missed the whole wave of storms—back to back…still shoveling to do but I am hoping the warm rays of the sun will help reduce that task.
Now that I am up, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed. I have lots to do and only 31 days until my new book, Blessing of the Animals is released. I hope you will advance order it this month.
Do me a favor and tell a friend—and stay tuned for the announcement and release parties!
I’d love to do a living room tour in southern California. This is where book clubs and pals invite their friends over for a potluck, they buy the book, and we chat and have a good time.
What do you think about helping me schedule a virtual book tour? All you have to do is send me any good ideas for blogs, podcasts, or other programs I should contact. Just drop me an email.
Finally, I am going to attempt to get all of you loyal newsletter subscribers moved over to the new system this month so you’ll get the additional hints and tips and reap the benefits of bonus material too.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.

2. Question(s) for the Month

No questions?
Purim begins today and many people celebrate fundraisers during this holiday, which is celebrated March 1- 5th and is considered one of the most joyous on the Jewish calendar.
Carnival-like celebrations, pet mitzvahs, pet blessings, beauty contests, plays and parodies, and feasting and drinking are some activities during Purim--which has been nicknamed Jewish Mardi Gras. You can read more about Purim at the NPR website: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7612676
Hollywood hounds are raising the “woof” along with a few eyebrows. Celebrity Joan Rivers made headlines when she gave her dog a bark mitzvah back in the early 1990’s. The Yorkshire Terrier, Spike, enjoyed a catered mitzvah complete with kosher food. He even received an embroidered yarmulke sporting his name for all to see, but other species enjoy participation in the pet mitzvah trend.
The Kehillat Chaim Bark Mitzvah, a reform temple, held a bark mitzvah during Purim and raised funds to benefit a small dog rescue group while adding to the temple’s general operating fund. Adoption of pet orphans was an adjunct to the occasion. The creativity of this event drew a large crowd of spectators who gathered to watch dogs compete in eight categories. One of the most endearing canine candidates was Sid, who costumed as Noah, refused to pull his biblical ark of Beanie Babies™.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
My puppy preschool students are keeping me on my toes. They are so cute and very, very smart. One pup and his owners commute to Big Bear just for their private sessions. He is one of the most endearing and bright pups that I have seen in a while.
Lately it seems that many young pups are becoming phobic. It seems that when they get removed from the litter they experienced additional trauma from car sickness—and then of course they journeyed to the veterinarian for shots.
Two traumatic associations with the car make them reluctant to travel and some get carsick. My favorite pup is no exception.
Now he loves to come to school but still has a negative time with loading and the crate. The pet parent’s made the mistake of comforting him and not helping him work through the drama…big mistake. They also did not work as I asked them to initially—which allowed the phobia to continue without being addressed.
Comforting an animal that is reluctant to cooperate actually can reinforce the panic and reluctance—and increase the phobia. Not dealing with it does not make it go away—it just lurks below the surface. This is the case with two of my young clients at the moment.
We’ve put together a program to help them overcome the fear gently and to create positive associations with travel and the crate. There are other steps you can take—but remember, if you are bringing home a new pup, take it slow and make sure that you take the critter if for treat visits to scary or negative (vets give shots) places so they can build a positive association with car trips and destination points.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
This year is off to a great start. I’ve been really busy with book marketing,
getting my automatic programming done for my online courses and odds n’ ends.
http://www.arkanimals.com and http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com were both completely revamped and relaunched. I am still waiting on the new banner—I’ll have to update any glitches when I configure the sites for the new look.
Did you get the bonus I sent out? I hope you enjoyed it.
I am going to be moving my newsletter subscribers over to a different management system in the near future. It will allow me to manage all my subscribers easily and help cut down on the spam being sent to me along with deleting any bounces. It will also allow me to send you a beautiful html newsletter instead of just text. Let me know if you are a foreign subscriber where this may be a problem.
BTW: One of my favorite blogs was “I’m not really a waitress” by Patry Francis. She finally landed a book deal and it is going to be released in February. If you like good mysteries it is getting good buzz before it is even out! To order just click below
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support.

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Will you give up chocolate for fur this Valentine’s Day?
Pet owners and prospective pet parents are giving up chocolate for fur this year—and before you get your feathers ruffled let me just say that I am referring to time spent with pets and not fur lined clothing or coats. There is a new coupon program Purina is launching this February:
Valentine's Day is the perfect time to spend with the ones you love, especially the ones who love you unconditionally all year long. Whether it's pawin' around with a playful pup or cuddling with a kitten on the couch, this year many pet owners plan to spend Valentine's Day with Fluffy and Fido.
According to a national Purina PetLover survey of 1,000 pet owning Americans, 61 percent of people who own one or more pets plan to include their pet in their Valentine's Day celebration. In fact, 30 percent of women who said they prefer to spend the holiday with just their pet think their furry friend is more in tune with their feelings than anyone else. In comparison, of the men who said they prefer to have a pet date for Valentine's Day, 43 percent said it's because their pet lowers their stress rather than adds to it, making them the perfect loving companion.
Although some pet owners are opting for a quiet Valentine's Day this year -- 57 percent of them said they will spend time snuggling on the couch with their pet and watching a movie -- others will continue to show their love in a more public way. In fact, 41 percent of women with pets said they engage in public displays of affection with their pet more than their significant other. This truly gives new meaning to "puppy love."
Pets can also have a positive impact on a person's social life. By simply having a pet with them while they are out and about, pet owners may seem more approachable and give that potential "special someone" a reason to stop and talk.
If you have been looking for love in all the wrong places visit your local shelter or rescue group where plenty of pets are waiting to find their perfect match in a forever home. Pet lovers can adopt a loving furry friend, who is sure to leave a paw print on their heart, just in time for the holiday.
In celebration of their four-legged Valentines, pet owners will receive some very special savings, which is great news for the 53 percent of pet owners planning to forego the traditional roses and chocolate, and give their pet a special meal and treat to show their affection.
On February 11, 2007, pet owners across the country will be able to utilize PetLover coupons appearing in local newspapers for savings on dog and cat treats for their pets this Valentine's Day. For details on the Purina PetLover coupon campaign or to find your four-legged love of a lifetime at a shelter in your area, visit http://www.purinapetlover.com

I put out a Valentine’s Day quiz out on the newswires, too. If you want to see the quiz and answers visit http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com and take a moment to fill out the drop down box—you’ll also be helping me test out the new system.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
Despite the cold weather and snow I have been seeing clients around the mountains. I have one particular pup that is a mess. He almost jumps out of his skin when the doorbell rings and barks/aggresses at strangers. However, the other part of the equation is that he is pretty good when out on a leash so I thought I would talk about this phenomenon so you can understand it better.
Everything in an animal’s life is either reinforcing or extinguishing. This means that an animal gets reinforcement for certain behaviors and gets corrected for other behaviors. When reinforcement occurs you usually see the behavior continue, when it gets corrected—or reprimanded—it usually disappears.
Some behaviors occur only in specific situations. So, an animal might be fine out in public but overly aggressive on its territory.
People often make mistakes in rearing their pets, especially small critters. The biggest errors occur when people pet or reward their dogs for simply existing or through efforts humans associate with comforting. Let me explain a little more.
In the dog world, everything is earned. Dogs need leaders, require mental stimulation (challenges), need jobs, and require exercise. These are not optional requirements—they are mandatory. The compensation for canines is attention (and yes, food). When rewards are unearned problems arise because the guidelines are not clear. The lack of leadership also puts the dog under stress…because they need leaders. Also, if any one of those components is missing, problem behaviors escalate.
In situations where an animal is unsure or barking out of fear, petting or giving an animal attention reinforces the behavior—which erroneously tells the dog that he or she should continue the behavior.
I distinctly remember a dog aggression seminar I attended with a colleague. In the audience (which was a bad idea anyway) was an aggressive dachshund. It was clear as to why the pup was aggressive—every time a human walked by and the dog growled, barked, or lunged at the person the owner, still clutching the dog, would give it a pat or a toy and tell the dog, “its okay.” Yikes! Talk about training errors.
Anyway, people make mistakes with their pets but fortunately most can be corrected. It takes a lot of time in some cases—especially if the behavior has been around a while.

I mentioned the Pet Parenting School in the last newsletter. Just a quick note to let you know that the discount cards are now available from select locations throughout the San Bernardino Mountains. Pups and kittens from 8-16 weeks of age are the right students for these programs.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Happy New Year...I hope you had a great holiday season and are ready for new and exciting adventures in 2007. I have a feeling that this year is going to be really busy.
I kept close to home for the holidays. We had some great snow and in between working on my websites, I spent time with friends. We had several snow storms which reminds me of why I love the winter. However, I am not too keen on the cold snaps and this year seems colder than normal.
On the campaign front I withdrew from the race for mayor and asked that my funds be distributed between the other two candidates. Why? Basically because I believe that life is too short for drama or disharmony…I got a peak at what might be in store for me if I won and didn’t want any part of it.
The good news is that we raised about half of the budget for the organization and had a blast at my pancake fundraiser. If you would like to see the snap shots you can find them at http://www.fawnskinflyer.com in the archives (December 16, 2006).
As usual, I have a lot on my plate. The book editing took a good chunk of December and is moving along nicely. Marc Bekoff and some other notable people have agreed to provide endorsements and I’ll share them with you once they are in.
I thought it would be nice to show my appreciation for your support. So, each month I am going to send you something special via email. The first will be a sneak peak into the new book and bonus material not available anywhere else.
On that note, have a great month and thanks for your continued support.

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Are you going to be exercising and dieting with your pet during the New Year?
One of the annual resolutions made at the New Year is to begin a healthier lifestyle. The two biggest efforts involve dieting and exercising. Just like humans overweight pets have many added stresses upon their bodies and are at an increased risk of diabetes, liver problems and joint pain. The ASPCA recognizes that and suggested the following:
1. Obesity develops when energy intake exceeds energy requirements. The excess energy is then stored as fat.
2. Certain groups of animals appear more prone to obesity than others.
3. Although there’s less data regarding obesity in cats, it appears to be less common in cats than in dogs.
4. Is your cat too fat? Is your dog a hog? If you cannot feel your pet’s ribs without pressing, there is too much fat.
5. Pets should have a "waist" between the back of the rib cage and the hips when looking at your pet from above. Viewed from the side, there should be a "tuck" in the tummy—the abdomen should go up from the bottom of the rib cage to inside the thighs.
6. Before beginning any program consult with a veterinarian.
7. Correct the diet of overweight animals who consume more calories than they require. Work with your veterinarian to determine your pets’ caloric requirements, select a suitable food and calculate how much to feed.
8. Increasing physical activity can be a valuable contributor to both weight loss and maintenance.
9. A successful weight management program requires permanent changes in human behaviors—not just the pets! Stop giving your pets too many treats and make sure they get ample opportunities to exercise.
10. Other tips:
- Remove pets from the room when the family eats.
- Feed pets several small meals throughout the day.
- Feed all meals and treats in the pets’ bowls only.
- Reduce snacks or treats.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
I don’t have much to share this month. My neighbors are up with their pups again. I first met them when they were tiny little tykes. Now, they are monsters and adolescents. If you have ever dealt with ANY adolescent you know that they are trouble and a handful.
For some reason people still wait too long to take action on schooling their “furry children” and as a result most animals end up abandoned or relinquished due to poor behavior.
What most people fail to understand is that pets need EARLY schooling. Kitten Kindergarten and Puppy Preschool are two programs that will help circumvent problems that can escalate as an animal ages.
Pet parenting programs begin teaching pets and their owners about good behavior and how to get it and keep it. They also help socialize animals to other environments, people, and experiences so they become secure creatures.
In 2007 I will begin offering pet parenting programs throughout the area. Keep an eye out for the discount cards that will be handed out to veterinarians and other pet supply and service businesses. Programs start at eight weeks of age and efforts continue until about 16 weeks of age. Then they begin more serious training within a short time. These efforts are fun and pretty painless so tell a friend and plan on attending if you get a new critter!
