1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
I hope you all had a great holiday and continue to have a great time through the end of the year. The weather went from warm to downright cold here…finally. The temperature over the last few nights has been in the low teens. Just last week I was running around in light clothing and now I wear the winter cap, gloves, and lots of layers. Thanksgiving visitors did not get to enjoy the snow here but the ski resorts plan on being open by the first weekend in December. The weather change is fortunate for the community.
Yesterday I awoke to a stunning sight. The wet weather iced all the trees and foliage. As the sun rose, it created a glimmering winter wonderland. Everything sparkled—the trees, the plants, the roads, and the surface of the lake. It took my breath away.
Being home for the winter allows me to ponder what direction to focus my talents--and pet parenting education is where I believe I will go. Animals are abandoned and dumped every day for behavior problems. If people got the education early and learned how to properly plan for a pet, how to socialize a companion animal, got them into school early, and took them out on adventures into different environments--the pet households would be happy and the pets would stay home instead of getting dumped.
In the meantime, I’ve also been working at redoing my website and getting the “Blessing of the Animals” website up and running. What are your plans for the New Year?
Please have a great holiday and a Happy New Year…thanks for your support and I look forward to chatting with you next year.

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
What is the best holiday gift for an animal lover?
It depends on the animal lover...
--If you want something with a holiday theme for dog lovers try the “12 Dogs of Christmas” DVD and related merchandise.
--Shelter animal lovers might try the Santa Paws program going on in southern California
--“Coats for Cubs” collects fur coats (inherited or otherwise) and sends them to rehabilitators and other animals facilities to help with cub rearing. Unusual, but clever! Coats for Cubs another link.
--Local animal rescue agencies and shelters are always in need of donations of funds or supplies. Better yet, why not make a New Year practice to volunteer regularly!
--Beastly bling and other gifts for your pets. The holidays are a great time to buy that new pet bed, warm coat, snacks, and new toys!
--Finally, you can always order a gift wrapped copy of What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality by Diana L Guerrero.
--Or try one of the “Armchair Safari Sweatshirts”
Happy Holidays!

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
I had a doggie delinquent arrive for boot camp last month and spent half the month working with him. The poor little Catahoula (breed of dog) was not socialized and is very phobic because it was not socialized. The damage that irresponsible breeders do to animals impacts their entire lives…and this is one example.
The first few days were spent getting the dog simply to walk without startling or panicking. Down by the lakeshore he freaked at the tiny waves of the lake. Anything that moved scared him and he often vomited from fear.
This particular canine was so petrified that it took almost a week of work so he could get to the point where he could learn, but once he began he became responsive. The good news is that after two weeks he is much improved. He loves traveling in the crate to a new location and enjoys school.
His owner met with me for a briefing. Also because I had to train her! It was great to have her express amazement at the change in the dog. As an animal trainer and therapist I’d like to see more progress. I used a couple of alternative remedies with this animal and believe the critter should be a home body. He is going to get periodic lessons to keep him moving forward.
I like happy endings…

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
October found me at a reunion with my pal and fellow animal behavior consultant colleague, Dr. Larry Lachman (http://www.familyanimal.com) and joining famous sound healer Elivia Melodey (http://www.elivia.com) for one of her events in the desert. Elivia took a brief respite to join me up in the mountains for a quick visit and rest from her life on the road and busy schedule in San Diego.
Speaking of the desert, I stopped by to visit fellow author pal, Robena Grant (http://www.robenagrant.com). She just finished a contemporary gothic romance and it is with an agent…so cross your fingers! Many of you might have met her when she came to speak to the Alliance of Writers or at one of her book signings locally.
I have to admit that I took advantage of the desert trip to drop by a couple of spas and to spoil my “niece” Nikki--who is Robena’s very large (and indulged) Akita. My fame spread throughout her group of doggie pals and when I left we were cavorting with about four other dog pals on our daily ambles. Now that I am without any pets, I really enjoy any chance I get to cuddle--and this group was fun.
Locally, my dog training group and clubs are done for the season. However, I am still offering the teleclasses. The Canine Club really ran amuck at our last session and all the high energy dog owners got the afternoon off since all the pups were exhausted. We had a delinquent who got a time-out when he tried to be top dog but once I integrated him—he did fine. The group sessions and social gatherings are really great learning environments for attendees.
The big news this month is that I am running for Honorary Mayor of Fawnskin! My fundraising charity work is targeted towards Fire Station 49 (http://www.fawskinfire.com). Part of my campaign is to sell “Fawnskin Passports” for donations of $5 or more.
To support my quirky campaign send a self-addressed stamped envelope with $5 to Go Guerrero 2007, PO Box 502, Fawnskin, California 92333. Checks should be made to the NSIA. The North Shore Improvement Association is the group sponsoring the fundraiser. For further details visit the Fawnskin Flyer at http://www.fawnskinflyer.com
Okay, that is it for me for the moment. Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
This month I want to remind you that it is time to winterize for your pet. People forget that pets need additional care during the cold winter climate, too.
Many animals suffer from dry skin or related issues due to the dryness. Oatmeal shampoo and conditioners help canines. Clean coats and feathers are the best solutions to help animals keep warm.
Supplements can assist all animals--including your fabulous felines. Birds enjoy misting but use care during cold weather. Ultimately, my big tip is that if you live in an area where you use the fireplace or heater, don’t forget to turn on the humidifier.
If animals like to spend time outside, be sure to provide shelter so they can get away from the wind or inclement weather. If critters like to come in with muddy or icy paws…place mats both on both sides of the door. Exterior and interior mats will catch some of the muck. The best strategy is to teach all critters to wait for a towel rubdown--as this helps keep floors clean and dry and most pets appreciate the rubdown.
The new igloo type dog houses use canine body heat to warm the shelter and the longer entrance is better at keeping the wind, rain, or snow out. Don’t forget to add a heated water dish…unheated water dishes tend to get an icy crust on top which makes it impossible for animals to drink.
Finally, remember that paw pads can get really cold and could collect ice clumps in the fur between the toes. A little vegetable oil between the toes (not on the pads) before an excursion outside can help--or just try some of the new fashionable booties!
Have a question? Drop me a line for the next issue.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
November seems to kick off the winter holiday season. I love Thanksgiving because it is a time of giving thanks and getting together to share good food and camaraderie. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving celebrations can be deadly to pets and some critters can be downright naughty.
Naughty pets can be redirected into better behavior—which takes some advance training. Boundary training is a good strategy but another good technique is to simply have the pets celebrate in their own manner in a secure yard or behind a baby gate with pals in another room.
If the celebration involves a large dinner party, consider sending pets to critter celebrations at a pet daycare or spa. Pets will be able to play and have a good time without worry. It can be their special day and beats the alternative where they might be ignored at home—many pets will act out when it is least appreciated.
For the safety of courteous cats and mannered mutts who remain in the middle of the festivities, be sure guests know that the rich foods harm pets. Coffee, alcohol, chocolate are seriously dangerous to pets—so alert guests to the dangers. The best strategy is often to choose to indulge pets in their own safe celebrations.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Wow, October is already here along with weather changes. Can you believe that the end of the year is just around the corner?
Despite my best intentions, last month my goal to achieve balance went right out the window as the last two weeks of September proved hectic but rewarding.
Media earlier this month include appearance of the Today Show and Countdown with Keith Olberman. I did attempt to reach you right after we filmed the segment—it aired early the next day. I’ve had calls from some other shows and anticipate some more segments in the near future.
Sadly, Steve Irwin died early in September after a fatal bard stab by a large stingray. This incident just highlights how important it is to not take any animal for granted. Animals have teeth, claws, spines, horns, barbs, and other defense mechanisms. The incident is a reminder that no matter how innocuous animals seem, they can always pose a threat.
Not too long ago I traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend SuperZoo. This industry tradeshow highlights the newest in pet products. Groomers, pet retailers, manufacturers, and pet professionals from all over the world gather in one place.
Connecting with old friends was great. My favorite events were the private party held at the top of Mandalay Bay Hotel in the House of Blues Foundation room. The view from the top of the hotel was fabulous.
What really took me back to the early days of my career was the visit to Shark Reef, an aquarium at the Mandalay Bay featuring a variety of aquatic predators. My career path has been complex and I’ve done a lot of things—some of you may not know that I started my career as a marine naturalist and whale watch narrator. The visit to Shark Reef sparked a bunch of memories.
At SuperZoo the grooming contest always is spectacular. My favorite competitor this year creatively trimmed and colored, “dragon dogs.” I only saw the finale this year but it was fun.
Oh! My new book cover is done and you can take a look at it and the cover copy at http://www.blessingoftheanimals.com
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month I asked if you knew what percentages of lost pets actually make it back home. Sadly only between 10-15% of those animals make are returned. Did you know that of all the Hurricane Katrina animals lost that only 15% have been returned to date?
I mention this because simple steps can help get your pet back to you if it gets lost. The best solution is to make sure your pets always have ID Tags on their collars—even if they are indoor only critters. During travel, tags should also include the numbers of friends or your cell phone. Local registration with animal control is a must--and useful to those finding your pet.
In addition to physical tags, it also helps to have your pet microchipped. The implantation can be done by veterinarians or animal shelters. The small chip is injected under the skin on the neck. You’ll want a universal chip that can be picked up by most scanners. If a pet is lost, the rice sized ID can be picked up by scanning devices at the shelter or animal services facility.
My question for you this month is” Will your pet be celebrating Howl-o-Ween or Yowl-o-Ween with you? I’d love to see some pictures!
I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
The American Pet Products and Manufacturers Association states that over 3.7 million dog owners purchase gifts or costumes for pets specifically for Halloween festivities. These beastly celebrations are becoming mainstream and pet friendly Halloween parties and parades are a just part of a larger big trend.
Today pet families include their dogs in ‘Howl-o-ween’ celebrations and cats participate in ‘Yowl-o-ween’ events. Not too long ago there were only a half a dozen pet costumes available. Today Rubie’s Costumes of New York, the world’s largest costume manufacturer, has a pet collection that offers over 40 different designs.
Halloween can be a frightening and risky holiday for pets but Halloween celebrations can be safe and fun for pets if people are prepared. There are choices today that didn’t exist ten years ago.
Although some pets might like to dress up and participate in events, many more have adverse reactions. Pets can get very frightened by costumes and other unusual activities surrounding the Halloween celebrations. Constant door knocking, bell ringing, and unusual appearing guests can stress pets or spook them. This can contribute to escape or aggression. Need some Halloween Pet Safety Tips?
-Keep animals confined on Halloween. Seclude them safely in a room away from the door and distractions.
-Walk pets before dark to avoid any altercations with costumed characters.
-House animals indoors just before and during Halloween. This protects pets from pranksters who tease, injure, steal, or kill animals.
-Make sure pets are wearing current identification. Many pets get spooked and escape. Unfortunately they end up in shelters without identification.
-Keep pets away from costumed ghouls and goblins. Halloween bites are not uncommon. Even friendly animals may bite due to stress, fear, or protective aggression.
-Store and dispense candy so that it is not accessible to pets. Many treats are toxic and even lethal to pets.
-Avoid the liability that comes from dressing up your pet and sending the critter out trick-or-treating with kids.
-Don't dress up pets unless they love it. If you do dress them up make sure the costume isn't annoying or unsafe. Avoid restriction of movement, vision, hearing or the ability to breathe or vocalize. Costumes should not contain small dangling accessories that could be consumed or cause choking.
-Restrict your pet's access to decorations. Jack o'lanterns with candles are obvious fire hazards, but cats can also get tangled in streamers. Pets can also become ill from eating holiday decor.
Halloween can be fun for all members of your family but avoid scary stories by using pet precautions—and make it a Happy Howl-o-ween instead of a ghoulish experience for pets!

Last month started off with a bang and then slowed down so I could start editing “Blessing of the Animals” again. My client list included a few kitties who were jealous of their dog pals, and another cat who seemed to have no motivation to answer to her owners…err, staff.
The book publishing world is full of phases. Most people don’t understand that books take 2-3 years to produce and that they undergo several editing phases.
Although multiple edits happened before the book went in, my acquisitions editor asked for some minor changes. Now the work has been assigned a project editor who will oversee the assignment until publication. I just finished working on some of the copyediting and anticipate at least one more pass through the work
prior to the production of the galleys.
Galleys are the actual layout of the book before it is bound. We will read through it to make any minor corrections and changes. At that point those people who promised endorsements will be contacted for their opinions.
Next, the galleys will be distributed for advance review about three months prior to publication. This work is anticipated for release in the spring of 2007 (late April).
I also found time to record and distribute a podcast called Ark Animal Answers. You can find it on Itunes and through a few of the other podcast directories. These one minute public service announcements contain tidbits related to the latest animals news and pet care. You
can also listen at my website http://www.arkanimals.com just click into the blog.
Amidst all the work projects, I forgot that I promised myself I would take time out to kayak. So the holiday arrives just in time to remind me that Labor Day is about balance. At one point the effort around this day encouraged people to work, play, and rest in balance (8 hours each).
I hope that during this holiday you remember to strive for balance. I know I will.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Do any of you know what percentage of lost pets actually make it back home?
Regarding last month’s request for book ideas: I didn’t get too many responses. However those that did take the time to write want me to release a training manual. I do have an idea in the works but wonder if I should combine the book with an audio or internet course. Anyway, thanks to those of you who took the time to give feedback.
I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
I adore all my students and recently I’ve had the opportunity to work with more felines than usual. Multiple animal households often face different challenges. During some of the dog training
classes the cats have walked up to me and demanded to
participate in school.
One such client is Pumpkin. She was around when I trained the last family dog about 15 years ago. The new pup is learning quickly but on the third visit, Pumpkin decided she needed to enroll, too.
Normally unsociable, she began following me around. The fifteen year old feline came and sat next to me as I wrote up the notes. When our eyes met, I realized she really wanted to go to school and told her I would work with her after the next session.
In “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild & Tame Creatures” (ISBN 1893361845) I discuss a similar episode from a time when I was training elephants. My colleagues ridiculed my chatting with the large animals.
Anyway, to the cat owner’s amazement, she came over and demanded (meowed)her session as we neared the end of the dog training. The two animals were vying for my attention, so we moved into the kitchen, as it was off limits to the dog and eliminated the competition over the trainer.
Pumpkin learned “sit” and “come” on command. Her owner laughed and shook her head in disbelief. I encouraged her to show off the cat’s prowess and left happy.
Most people dismiss the abilities of animals. Pumpkin really, really wanted the same opportunity as her canine pal. Mental stimulation and learning is fun for animals. The way I teach is fun and the animals love it, and love their teacher. This is super rewarding to me. If you work with a trainer or behaviorist, check to see how your animal responds. Happy anticipation says it all.
Oh! I forgot. Check out my most recent interview on National Public Radio. Just click on the MP3 link or directly connect to the WVXU National Public Interview about "What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality" link here.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Sheesh, it is August already. Where has this summer gone? My trip to Cincinnati was fabulous. I spoke to a group of Iams employees at the Proctor & Gamble’s innovative think tank called the Clay Street Project. What a fabulous group of people. I love speaking engagements like that one.
My whirlwind trip also found me visiting with Thane Maynard at the Cincinnati Zoo. Thane is known nationally as the “90 Second Naturalist.” You can read more about the trip below in Critter Chronicles.
Thane also did an interview with me about “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality” for his syndicated show on National Public Radio (NPR). Keep your eye open on my website for the release date. The producer said it would be about a month.
July ended with a bang at the Fawnskin Doo Dah Parade 2006. You can check out some of the photos at http://www.fawnskinflyer.com.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Okay, I really need your help. I need to pick a new book topic to work on this winter. Let me know what your burning desires are. Just keep it animal related!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
I've been on the road for the past couple of weeks. The adventure began with a whirlwind trip of flying out, meetings, speaking, dinner with the facilitator and another day of flying home. I had to spend the day after attempting to recover.
I learned that “When Pigs Fly” products celebrated the pork industry of Cincinnati (aka Porkopolis) and that the whimsical winged porcine sit atop the Riverwalk. Visit http://www.fpqrp.com/pighist.html to check out the history on this little piggy!
My arrival to Cincinnati was uneventful except that the lights in the airport were turning off as I walked down to the main level. The midnight arrival to the hotel felt like it was too late and the early morning was difficult, mostly due to the time change. Fortunately my 7:30am meeting was cancelled so I finished some last minute details for my talk and then was whisked away to the zoo.
There I met with Christina Anderson and Thane Maynard. Get a glimpse here: http://www.cincinnatizoo.org/Education/90-Second%20Naturalist/meet%20thane%20maynard/meetthane.html Thane is known nationally as the “90 second naturalist” and has been a zoo industry professional for a long time.
The place was hopping and after yet another cup of coffee, we boarded the zoo golf cart and zoomed over to meet Cathryn Hilker. Cathryn is a cheetah expert and has dedicated her life to the species. You can read more about Cathryn Hilker and her Angel Fund at the Cincinnati Zoo website at this link:
http://www.cincyzoo.org/Conservation/GlobalConservation/cheetah/AngelFund/angelfund.html
I met cheetahs Chance, Bravo and Sarah. The two cheetah boys just happened to be at the lovely age of adolescence. (They leave mom about 2 years of age.) Anyway, Chance purred a lot but he also was pushing the envelope a bit. The behavior is a new one and is probably going to provide for some entertainment for a while. Naughty, naughty boy!
I also joined Cecil Jackson and got to meet Semliki, an okapi. Here is a snap of the handsome pair: http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/11/05/zoo_zoom.jpg
Okapis are forest dwelling creatures related to the giraffe. Normally they are very flighty but the staff from the elephant department have done a great job and training and taming these lovely creatures.
Cecil is a second generation animal professional and we know some of the same people. The okapi was discovered in 1910 and was part of my logo for a long time until I had it redone this year. Learn more about the okapi now: http://diglib1.amnh.org/articles/okapi/okapi1.html
Anyway, I got to get close up and personal and the critter got a good scratch. The coat is very dense, short and feels like velvet. Cecil also introduced me to his “girls.” A small herd of elephants who had to show off a few behaviors before I had to be again whisked away to my event.
I spoke to a group from IAMS Corporation, a division of Proctor & Gamble. The company, established in the 1940’s was acquired by P&G in 1999. The event went well and it was really was a blast.
I did an interview with Thane for a regional segment on Weekend Edition on NPR (National Public Radio). I am not sure when it will air but I will keep you posted or
you can check the schedule at WVXU Cincinnati: http://www.wvxu.org/schedule/
or learn more at the Cincinnati Zoo page: http://www.cincinnatizoo.org/Education/90-Second%20Naturalist/90second.html
I also ran into Amy Sutherland who I met a couple of years ago when she began work on her book title, Kicked, Bitten & Scratched. The work details the program I graduated from years ago and catalogs the newer students and animals that live there. Kicked, Bitten & Scratched is getting great reviews so you might want to take a gander. Order it now from the link below. I've included a couple of other books you might want to take a gander at it and order it via this link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0670037680/ref=ase_arkanimals/103-7052213-6142227?s=books&v=glance&n=283155&tagActionCode=arkanimals

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Can you believe how fast this summer is passing? Soon it will be the
4th of July, and as some of my friends say, “Then it will be
Christmas!”
Last month I had another unexpected speaking engagement and book signing. The highlight was teaching an eight year old to train her pup in a positive way. She had unusual aptitude for someone so young.
Most trainers avoid training puppies early since it is very labor intensive and because they have no attention spans. I like to get young animals started into positive behavior early and avoid the adolescent blues of redirection and extinguishing bad behavior.
One of my colleagues is on maternity leave and so I have been taking up some of her work load and it has kept me busy. I am seeing clients around southern California and it is actually nice to leave my mountain abode and get into the real world. It really makes me appreciate where I live and my life’s work.
This month will find me in Cincinnati. I’ve been hired to speak to a large pet food corporation and am looking forward to the adventure. Everyone who will attend is reading, “What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild & Tame Creatures.”
My editor finally called me regarding my newest work. She liked it and is NOT requesting any changes. The only adjustment will be to the order of the content. This is great news!
Finally, this summer I urge you to keep your critters safe from the summer
heat, rattlesnakes, and the seasonal insanity of fireworks. This issue
will include some tips for pet safety during the holiday fireworks.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month I asked you what you knew about the Pet Evacuation
Transportation Standards Act. You can find the updates at the Library of
Congress Website.
Basically the bill provides for rescue relief and transportation of animals
during disasters. It has been referred to committee. Find more
information here: http://thomas.loc.gov/bss/109search.html
This is a summary of the search page from that site:
H.R.3858
Title: To amend the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act to ensure that State and local emergency preparedness operational plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals following a major disaster or emergency.
Sponsor: Rep Lantos, Tom [CA-12] (introduced 9/22/2005)

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
This is a reprint from one of my articles at arkanimals.com.
Many animals are traumatized by the loud fireworks during the holiday celebrations. The fireworks, aircraft, and other related noises may turn your pets into a quivering mass of jelly or have them bolt as a result of their fright; they may also be destructive to the home, or even worse, to themselves.
There are ways to desensitize a pet to thunder storms and fireworks, but it takes time and preplanning. If this holiday is right around the corner, there are a couple of things owners can do to assist their pets through this short period of potential trauma.
First, understand that "comforting" your pet, although done with good intentions, can actually reinforce the fear and panic. You could call it "training by accident " and it is best to refrain from this activity. Reassuring your pet is different from the cuddling, petting, holding, and trying to physically relieve the stress. The age of your pet, socialization, experience, and breed can also influence their reactions.
The best preparations that you can use at such short notice is to make sure that your pet has ID tags with current information on them, and that they are safely secured both before and through the holiday period. Here are a few quick temporary options:
-Crate your pet at home
-Kennel the pet professionally
-Keep the pet confined/restrained indoors
-Use Drug Therapy (Tranquilizers/anti-anxiety medications from the veterinarian)
Ideally your home environment is the best holding area for your pet. It is suggested that you put your animal in a quiet room or into a crate. Crates like Vari-Kennel® or Kennel-Cab® seem to work better than the wire ones. Wire crates tend to be more open and feel less secure and your pet could damage their teeth on them more easily.
If you are using a room in the home, the best one to restrain an animal in is the bathroom, laundry room, or secure garage. The room to choose is one where there are no windows to jump through, or where they can be blocked off and are too high and narrow to access.
Also try to darken the room and/or crate and play soothing music fairly loud (to help drown out the firework noise). It is ideal if a family member can be at home with the animal through this time. These are the types of things that will help most pets feel secure and calmer.
Before the holiday, be aware that fireworks may be set off before dark. Keep your dog on a leash when toileting, and make sure that your pets have on a snug collar with the name and phone number of the veterinarian, and owners. Put your pets "to bed" early on the fourth before the fireworks start.
Crates or confinement serve as a "den" for your pet and will help them to feel more secure --if this is trained right and done gradually. Long periods alone in a crate should be avoided. Some dogs will not like being confined if you do this too quickly and many will protest by howling, whining, barking, and having a fit.
If you have time, it is best to gradually train them to "crate." Put food or a treat in the kennel with the door latched open. Later work at closing the door for a few seconds and praising them for staying there quietly. Gradually lengthen the time spent in the crate with you there, and then with you leaving the room.
Always check with your veterinarian and behavior specialist before using any drugs or tranquilizers, and don't forget to watch out for guests opening doors up which can provide an opportunity for animals to bolt out. For further help, contact your veterinarian or your local animal behavior specialist.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Summer has finally arrived here in the mountains of southern California. Even though the days were nice, we just survived a cold snap of 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Needless to say, I have NOT been gardening yet.
However, I did change out the double paned screening for the summer screens to allow the fresh air inside.
The radio spots are getting good reviews from the community. We picked up three new co-sponsors from the pet industry. Nutro Pet Foods, Wellness Pet Foods, and Canidae. I hope to eventually take these short educational spots national in the future. Keep your fingers crossed.
My book event with Katherine Blanc (author of “The Bad Puppy’s Guide to Life” & “The Bad Kitty’s Guide to Life”) we fun and successful. Be sure to visit http://www.arkanimals.com for the blog for the latest news and where you can order my latest recommendations for books.
Although I had a great trip to Flagstaff, Arizona last month, it ended traumatically with the news that CE, my Amboina King Parrot died early on the morning I was to return. It is always tough to lose any living creature you love. As Forrest Gump says, “...that’s all I have to say about that.”
Allergies have prevented me from doing much in the yard but I did get the bird baths filled and am pondering the project. I’ve managed to avoid an ear infection but am still on the antihistamines.
Which brings me to the point—pets suffer from allergies as well. If your pet is sneezing, scratching, or has running eyes get him or her to the veterinarian for treatment early so you can avoid complications such as hot spots, sinus or ear infections.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
The answer to last months question is traveling! The Travel Industry Association of American shares these interesting pet travel statistics:
In the USA and estimated 29.1 million say they have traveled with a pet in the past three years. Canines are the most popular travel companion for 78% of the group with felines in second place at 15%. I think the drastic drop is due to old habits of not socializing or taking cats on as many adventures. Some of you knew my cat, Yasmine (pronounced Yaa-s-meen), who was fully trained and who loved to travel.
Households traveling with pets increases during the summer when more families travel on vacation. Auto or truck is the primary mode of transportation at 76%. Other modes of transport include Recreational Vehicles at 10%, and airline travel at 6%.
Pet travelers stay most frequently with friends/relatives (32%) but the services of pet friendly hotels or motels is not too far behind (29%).
If you can’t take your pet with you or need to find options for pet care while on the road, don’t forget about pet day care services or pet-sitters. Just be sure to call in advance to make arrangements and check on availability.
My question(s) for you for this month: What do you know about the Pet Evacuation & Transportation Standards Act?
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.

3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
For those of you with pets, don’t forget to look for new innovative programs for your critters. Last month we launched a new program and I wanted to invite you to pop up for a visit!
In addition to the Puppy Club, Canine Club, and Kitten Kindergarten programs launched last month, we have instituted a “drop-in” dog training service and will be offering “drop-in” behavior clinics shortly.
Back in the early 1990’s I started a “Doggie Aerobics” program. The program consisted of a monthly fee so you could attend as many training sessions as you wanted. The challenge was that I could not get people to go home! They stayed for two or three sessions each day.
Today, I find many people want to participate in group sessions but cannot commit to the six to eight weeks of classes. The Clubs and Kindergarten services are free (donations only) and allow people and their pets to meet others so they can get together for romps, social interludes, and other fun activities. Those participants have asked for a group training option so we will begin the new programming on June 17th.
People must call to pre-enroll and I will have an audio introduction that must be reviewed prior to participation. Each week will feature a different topic. The sessions will be an hour long and only $25!
If you want to enroll in the Big Bear Lake, California location the sessions take place on Saturdays at 4:00pm to enroll call(800) 818-7387.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Wow this year is going by quickly. April found me really busy finishing the book was a relief and I managed to get down to the desert for a brief break with author pal Robena Grant (aka Schaerf). Other authors understand the aftermath of meeting deadline. Incessant hours render you comatose and barely able to function. The nice thing about recovering around and understanding person is that they allow you to
stare at the ceiling, babble incoherently, and support your need for sleep and relaxation.
Needless to say, I slept and swam in the nice 90 degree plus weather. I left my mountain dwelling to bask in weather 40-45 degrees warmer and coming back was a shock.
April and May also landed me with a couple of last minute events. The “Tea for Zoo” fundraiser was fun. If you are ever out this way in the Spring don’t miss the Bed & Breakfast Experience in Big Bear. For a mere $15 you get to tour 10 of the establishments, snack and receive a recipe from each place you visit.
This month I also received sponsorship from Bear Valley Pet & Animal Supply. They bought a series of radio ads to run my “Ark Animal Answers.” Each spot brings the community commentary about breaking news or tidbits concerning pet and animal care.
You might have heard about the anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake. Did you know that I've been featured in the book, "The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes?" The author took some of my expert comments on pet disaster behavior and included excerpts from my booklet within the text. Jim Berkland uses lost and found ads as an aid to predicting geological activity.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
My question(s) for you for this month: What are you doing with your pet this summer?
There are some new pet trends hitting the news. The first airport kennel has been established which may help with some of the lost pet traveler and related issues. Here is an edited version of the official blurb:
“Continental Airlines unveiled an animal kenneling facility at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, the first airline-owned kennel situated on airport property in the United States.
This new service will be offered to the carrier's
four-legged customers that utilize the acclaimed PetSafe service.
The facility boasts approximately 1,100 square feet of space equipped to provide the ultimate in care for animals traveling on Continental. Services include separate caging areas for all species, separate ventilation systems, exercise runs and full grooming facilities. The kennel, located inside Continental's Houston cargo facility, will provide care 24-hours a day, seven days a week, for animals that have stopovers or overnights in Houston.
To operate this unique facility, Continental has retained the services of Kingwood Pet Kamp, the airline's kennel operator for the last seven years. Kingwood Pet Kamp will provide comprehensive animal handling -- cleaning crates and cages, exercising the animals, rendering emergency care when necessary, and grooming and bathing services on request."
One of my PSA’s concerns “hot dogs.” Even at a low 72 degrees pets can suffer from heatstroke, or the complications from it, if left in a vehicle for just a few minutes. Leave pets at home and provide shade, water, misters and air conditioning—it may save a critter’s life.
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you. ====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles
====================================================
Summer weather presents many challenges to pets. Ticks, mosquitoes, dangers of heartworm, burrs, sunburned noses, and burnt paws are a few of the hazards. You’ll want to be alert and take precautions.
The most dismissed danger to pets is the summer heat. Warm rays turn automobiles into ovens. Less than ten minutes in a hot car can kill a pet.
Some cities have instituted hefty fines for leaving pets in vehicles. If you come across a pet in distress call animal control, humane officer, or the local sheriff’s department.
Canines can only cool themselves through panting and licking their paws. Overheated animals should be immersed in cool, not cold, water and rushed to a veterinary hospital.
In the heat of the summer make sure you always carry a cool water supply for pets. Ice cubes melt down into a cool refresher but you can also freeze water in an empty gallon judge and tote it with you.
Shade is imperative. Make sure you provide an escape for pets that is also well ventilated. Dogs and other animals can wear fashionable visors to protect their noses from the sun.
In arid regions, place misters around the shaded areas. They provide added relief for all species.
Leave your pet indoors in an air-conditioned room during heat waves. Avoid trouble when the mercury rises by exercising pets only during the early morning hours, at dusk, or after dark.

4. Schedule of Upcoming Events & Appearances

This month I am launching two clubs. Advanced registration is required and all participants must be human and dog friendly. Enrollment is free! Make new friends, tire your pet out, and have fun.
