1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
November required that I commute a whole 7.5
miles to an event with
3 other local authors-William Sarabande (Joan
Cline), Rita
Robinson, and Katherine Blanc. Last year I participated
in this
block party and pre-holiday sale. Great fun
and frivolity.
Unfortunately I don't have too much to add
but I've been busy writing
my next book. Another publisher is releasing
a similar title
and asked for my endorsement. After checking
with my agent and
new publishing house-I did. But initially, I
was not too happy over
it.
I wish you many blessings for the holiday season
and hope you
have a fabulous new year. Click here for my
card to you:

Have a great month and thanks for your continued

2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
My question(s) for you for this month is:
How do you include your pet in your holiday
celebrations?
If you have any tips or hints to share on
this topic please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: Holiday Pet Hints
====================================================
Winter holiday celebrations can be happy events
but the holidays
can be disastrous and even downright deadly
for pets. Holiday
threats to animals can include seasonal decorations,
ornamental
lighting, ingestion of inappropriate or toxic
items, excessive
consumption of rich foods or harmful food, candle
flames,
and many other hazards.
During this time of year we want to include
our pets in
celebrations and remember the holiday significance
of animals,
but holiday dangers and seasonal threats really
exist. Fortunately,
anyone can take a few pet precautions and make
the winter
festivities into safe and humane holiday celebrations.
For instance, during gatherings make sure that
animals are
occupied with their own treats and activities.
Good holiday
etiquette means that pet owners take steps to
make sure pets
are mannerly and that your guests and family
are alert to
the need for restraint of food treats.
Rich foods and inappropriate feeding can create
health complications
for household critters. Dangerous food items
include holiday favorites
such as chocolate, coffee, onions, fatty foods,
alcoholic beverages,
and cooked bones. Grapes and raisins can also
be hazardous. My
suggestion: Make sure you have appropriate treats
for the pets and
monitor the quantity.
Alert guests to the household pet rules and
make sure your pets behave.
Many guests will not appreciate your drooling
darling or fur additions
to their good clothing. Plan ahead to avoid
problems or fine-tune your
guest list to pet people. Baby gates or play
pens can keep animals from
getting underfoot while still allowing them
to still be part of the celebration.
Pets need to be part of the family activities,
but safely.
I recommend placing pets in an adjacent room
or yard so they can have
their own "pet party." Since most
kids love animals you might want to
combine the two and ask young visitors to occupy
pets away from the
main festivities.
Giving pets as presents is NOT a good idea.
If you want to give someone
a pet for a holiday, use the clever humane alternative
instead. For
instance, gather the pet necessities for the
new critter. Next, wrap each gift
separately and be sure to conclude the gift
opening party with a picture
of the ideal pet and/or a pet adoption certificate
from an animal agency
or similar entity. Your actions will be fun
and conscientious-and will
build up the excitement and anticipation of
the new arrival.
Make the effort a family affair and search
for the pet together. Families
grow closer through the researching and planning
for a new household
member. Those efforts will also keep the pet
in the home and make the
adaptation easier for everyone-not just the
new pet. The big perk is that
your humane actions sets a good example for
kids and others within your
influence.
Additional holiday hazard alerts include:
-Remember that plants (holly, mistletoe, poinsettia,
lilies, Christmas rose,
etc,) are poisonous to pets.
-Pine needles can create problems if ingested.
-Unsecured Christmas trees pose hazards to
climbing critters as they can
topple or be knocked over.
-Don't forget to prevent the ingestion of Christmas
tree water since stagnant
water or preservatives can be toxic.
-Other holiday hazards include menorahs, candles and liquid potpourri pots.
-Fire and burns are not the only threats to
pets and the household. Scented
items can also be harmful--especially to birds.
-The ingestion of inappropriate foods, tinsel,
ribbons or garlands can cause
sickness or obstruction.
-Breakable items such as glass and other ornaments
pose a threat along with
electrical cords, heated decorative bulbs, hooks,
and a wide variety of other
adornment items.
-Keep décor items out of reach of your
pet or in places your animals cannot
get to them.
-Nicotine poses a threat. Keep it out of reach.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Wow, November is already here! I am sticking close
to home and finishing up my book over the next
two months. In the meantime,I am also working
on setting up the new shopping cart and other
odd jobs.
I just got back from an event down in Palm Springs.
My friend Elivia Melodey asked me to help her
with her gig at the Doral Resort. The Whole Life
Expo & Psychic Fair was very fun-except for
the scare. One of the vendors asked me to try
a sample of his product and after sampling it
I immediately went into a serious allergic reaction.
I felt my throat swelling shut and a subsequently
break-out in hives. The good news is that I didn't
go into anaphylactic shock or have to get paramedic
help. Which was a good thing because I am
pretty calm and too cool and collected in an emergency
and nobody really took it seriously!
I have not had that type of reaction since I was about eight and it was pretty spooky. Citrus water helped cut the reaction (to nut oils) and a dose of Benadryl® helped further. However, I was hallucinating on the way home and pretty wiped out from the ordeal--both physically and from the stress. I am pretty good today.
My event just prior to the trip was cancelled
and I found myself engulfed in a fog--literally.
Locals know the dangers of traveling on the rim
of these mountains. The fog gets so thick you
cannot see the lines on the
road or anything around you. Anyway, I spent the
evening with a pal and headed back up in the am.
Most of October was spent in "Puppy Therapy."
Someone asked me whose therapy it was--mine of
course. If you have never trampled, mouthed or
loved by a litter of ten puppies I can highly
recommend it. (I talked a bit
about this at http://www.fawnskinflyer.com if you want to read more details.)
My role as surrogate aunt was very fulfilling. I met them all shortly after they were born and have been with them as they have grown and gone to new homes. Three remain but I am sure they will be gone shortly.
Many of my neighbors volunteered to help with
"sleep overs." This is where the pups
got to stay overnight elsewhere and then return
to the litter. All the
socializing with humans and dogs make this litter
very well adjusted and is a unique angle for socialization
and less trauma during placement.
The other news is that people have been booking
appointments for animal career counseling and
animal behavior from my website http://www.arkanimals.com so thanks for your referrals.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued
support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month I asked everyone if they dressed up
their pets or included them in Halloween or Harvest
Festival celebrations. Many of you do but did
you know that the sales of pet costumes has increased
annually by 15-18%
over the past five years?
According to Howard Beige (Rubie's Costume Company of New York), pet owners bought six percent of this year's Halloween costumes!
Howl-o-ween celebrations are held all around
the nation and costume competitions are held as
fundraisers and even on some of the national morning
shows along with efforts to get the critters adopted.
There
are even parades with dogs, cats, ponies, goats,
turtles and rabbits in their finest attire.
When Rubie's first offered pet costumes seven years ago, they only offered six--now they offer 40 including the Star Wars characters Yoda and Darth Vader (which are the most popular). Super Dog, Scooby Doo, Pimp Dog, Taxi Cab and other unique costumes were worn by "Haute Dogs" this year.
Prices have also increased with the interest.
Once you get a costume for $5 but now it isn't
unusual to find one for $15 or more. So, plan
your next year celebrations and don't forget to
include your pet!
My question(s) for you for this month is:
How concerned are you about the Dog Flu (Canine
Influenza)?
If you have any tips or hints to share on
this topic please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: Canine Influenza aka Dog
Flu
====================================================
So just how concerned should you be over canine
influenza? The recent news about this dog flu
has many canine owners up in arms. My last review
on this topic was news released during the third
week
of October:
What is the Dog Flu?
The dog flu (canine influenza) is a highly contagious
respiratory infection of dogs caused by a virus
closely related to the virus that causes equine
influenza. It is thought that the equine influenza
virus mutated to produce the canine influenza
virus.
Is Canine Influenza severe?
There are two types of the canine influenza virus,
one is a mild form and the other is more severe
and accompanied by pneumonia. Most dogs exposed
to the virus become infected and nearly 80% show
disease symptoms. Fortunately, most affected dogs
have the mild form. Because this is a new disease,
almost all canines are susceptible and have no
immunity. Fatal cases of pneumonia resulting from
a dog flu infection have been reported but the
5-8% fatality rate is low and appears to pose
the most risk to animals with compromised health
or advanced age.
Mild Form of Canine Influenza:
The mild form of canine influenza has particular
symptoms that include a soft, moist cough that
persists for 10 to 30 days. Some dogs may exhibit
a dry cough similar to "kennel cough"
(caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica/parainfluenza).
So, the dog flu virus has been frequently mistaken
for "kennel cough." Some animals may
also have a thick nasal discharge, which is usually
caused by a secondary bacterial infection.
Severe Form of Canine Influenza:
In the severe form of canine influenza, dogs develop
high fevers (104ºF to 106ºF) and clinical
signs of pneumonia (increased respiratory rates
and difficulty breathing). Pneumonia may be due
to a secondary bacterial infection.
How is it spread & how you can help
prevent infection?
Canine influenza virus can be spread via direct
contact with from infected dogs, and by contact
with contaminated objects such as toys, waterbowls,
bedding and other surfaces. Avoid taking your
pet to locations where dogs are coughing or exhibiting
other signs of respiratory disease such as dog
parks, kennels and similar public areas.
If you work or play with dogs, make sure that your clothing, equipment, surfaces, and hands are cleaned and disinfected after interactions to prevent disease transmission.
The American Veterinary Medical Association
said:
"The first recognized outbreak is believed
to have occurred in Florida racing greyhounds
in January 2004. From June to August of 2004,
outbreaks of respiratory disease were reported
at 14 tracks in 6 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Kansas, Texas, and West Virginia). Between January
and May of 2005, outbreaks occurred at 20 tracks
in 11 states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida,
Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas,
West Virginia, and Wisconsin). Infection has also
been confirmed in pet dogs in California, Connecticut,
Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina,
New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania,
Washington State, and Washington, DC. These cases
occurred in animal shelters, humane societies,
rescue groups, pet stores, boarding kennels, and
veterinary clinics."
If your dog shows symptoms that lead you to suspect infection with the dog flu, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian so your dog can be evaluated. If canine influenza is suspected, your vet will begin treatment to help boost your pet's immune system.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
This month I only have two excursions. One is the
West Hollywood
Book Festival on October 2nd. The event is similar
to the Los Angeles
Times Festival of Books but is the mini version.
The other event
occurs later in the month for a Regional Occupation
Program in
Orange County. I am part of the panel related to
animal careers-one
of my other specialties.
On the home front I was sadden by the loss of my
friend and neighbor.
The bad news is that they are going to build another
home adjacent to
my little dwelling and I am wondering if it is time
to move. The noise
and disruption makes it hard to concentrate and
the destruction of the area
is sad.
I've been spending time out in the kayak. It is
my form of nature therapy.
In the meantime, I've kept a bunch of people abreast
of the animal disaster
Rescue efforts. In my own backyard we are again
facing fire issues. If anything,
this is a reminder to prepare yourself and your
pets for emergencies and
unexpected evacuations.
Have a great month and thanks for your continued
support!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
The big answer for last months question is overwhelming,
NO. When
I first began doing animal disaster preparedness
work even the
emergency rescue crews did not have kits for evacuation
in their
personal vehicles or their homes. It takes little
time to prepare and I
hope you will make up your kits in preparation for
the worst. You
can get a copy of "Animal Disaster Preparedness
for Pet Owners &
Pet Professionals" via the link on the index
page
of http://www.arkanimals.com or visit our site
index for
excerpts available as press releases.
My question(s) for you for this month is:
Do you dress your pet up or include them in Halloween
or Harvest
Festival celebrations?
Please post a comment to any of my online blogs.

3. Critter Chronicles: Animal Disaster Preparedness
Tips
====================================================
In the United States we are so removed from the
rest of the world that
we often don't pay attention to other parts of the
world and certainly
have not paid serious attention to the importance
of our furry family
members. If you disagree, just consider the most
recent disasters and
how the animals were discounted or left behind despite
the protests
of their owners.
Finally, a bill has been proposed to include animals
in disaster plans
on the federal level. In the meantime, here is an
excerpt from an
interview related to disaster preparedness:
"In any disaster, people should make plans
to evacuate with their
animals and contingency plans need to be in place
for times when
pets are home alone. If a situation is unsafe for
humans it is unsafe
for animals."
Guerrero continued. "Animals are not usually
allowed in human
emergency shelters due to health precautions and
limited space.
Networking with neighbors and contacting local animal
shelters,
and other animal service agencies, in advance of
a disaster is a
critical preparedness step. Prepared people can
eliminate additional
stress simply by checking on what networks are established
locally,
with other counties, and with the national animal
rescue groups-
and by learning how they can obtain assistance from
the network."
Her animal disaster booklet, now in the seventh
edition, offers tips
to prepare prior to a disaster, how to form or get
involved in a animal
disaster preparedness network, and what items to
include in kits for
dogs, cats, horses, and birds. Guerrero also includes
tip sheets for
behavior, identification, health, diet, and sanitation
for multiple
species during a disaster.
The booklet ends with a section on post disaster
animal behavior
and list valuable resources for the pet owner including
animal disaster
agencies, where to get training, and suppliers of
kits and equipment.
Guerrero's pet disaster preparedness hints are:
1. Take your animals with you!
Pets that are released or left behind often become
victims of starvation,
predators, contaminated food or water, accidents,
or exposure to the
elements.
2. Make sure animals have ID tags on them and get them microchipped.
3. Three weeks of supplies is not excessive for
humans or pets. Rotate
gradually every six months.
4. Proof of current vaccinations will be required
for housing animals in
many facilities. Make sure you have copies stored
in a waterproof
container with other supplies so you don't forget
to take them.
5. Maintain current photos of your property and
animals. Take photos
of any damage BEFORE you clean up for insurance
claims.
6. Make sure you have a plan that is effective
during the times when
you are separated from your pets.
7. Use wire crates to transport and house smaller
animals since they
provide better ventilation and fold up easily for
storage and transport.
8. Provide shade along with water for animals.
If an animal does not
eat initially, don't worry too much--stressed animals
often avoid food.
9. Return home only after authorities advise that it is safe to return.
10. Use caution upon your return. Debris can inflict
injury to you
and your animals.
11. Keep your animal restrained to prevent them
from running
off or becoming lost since their familiar landmarks
and smells
will be altered.
12. Seek professional help for any family member
(or any animal)
who exhibits abnormal behavior patterns post disaster.
I've placed donation links to the major animal
disaster relief
groups at my website. If you want to help, the best
way is to send
money. Donate to animal disaster rescue efforts

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
The only travels for August were out onto Big Bear
Lake in a boat
and kayaks, adventures at the local Renaissance Fair,
and a
brief jaunt to the Sawdust Festival in Laguna. I've
been sticking
close to home and working on the project pile that
only seems
to be getting bigger.
Last week I began serious work on my two book projects.
I am editing
a resource project for the zoo industry and working
on my new book.
In between, I was asked if I could put together some
segment ideas
for a radio show out of Ohio.
Most people don't know that most radio guests just
call in now.
I hope to be a regular and I spent about 28 hours
in three days
putting together a few segments and an electronic
media kit specifically
for such inquiries. I do have a website for that purpose
but many
producers are so swamped that this might be helpful
to them. Anyway,
if you have any producer or radio host pals drop me
an email or
invite them to check out http://www.dianalguerrero.com.
I also got asked to provide expert comments on the
animal
disaster situation aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
See below for details
on how you can help.
This week I received an email from Germany. An editor
is working
on the German translation of "What Animals
Can Teach Us about
Spirituality." It will be the first non-English
translation. Foreign rights
were sold to India but that edition is in English.
By the way, the Indian
edition just got a pretty good review, too. To read
it, just click on
the link at http://www.dianalguerrero.com/2005_media_coverage.htm
My gossip rag, http://www.fawnskinflyer.com is a real hoot. It has
created quite the buzz around town AND my new pen
name is G.G.
(GiGi) which is short for gossip girl. Anyway, the
rag is my fun
project. The town LOVES it. Who knew?
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Thanks to all of you who have emailed me or commented
on
the blogs. I appreciate your questions and suggestions.
My favorites
were the squirrel stories submitted by some of the
locals.
My question(s) for you for this month is:
Do you have an evacuation or disaster kit and plan for your pet?
Please post a comment to any of my online blogs.
See the one
below, too.
If you have any tips or hints to share on this
topic please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: Hurricane Katrina's Animal
Survivors
====================================================
Residents in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi have
had their lives
turned upside down and it is hard to describe. Many
have lost everything
including their pets.
Animal rescue group operations are just getting underway
and the
effort will be ongoing based on the degree of damage.
My old pal Nick
Gilman is on his way to Mississippi with a group of
technical animal
rescuers while many of the other people I know are
on standby in
various regions of Texas and Florida.
Work in disaster rescue is hazardous but there are
glimmers of hope
beyond the tragedy. During my work in the aftermath
of Hurricane
Georges, our teams worked from daylight to nightfall
rescuing wild
life and pets.
The tragedy of finding severely injured animals like
a pelican with
a broken wing, or the raccoon barely alive were balanced
with joyful
reunions of people to their pets.
In "What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality"
I wrote about one
lady who drove in to our incident command center for
help. She came in
daily to care for her pets and her whole being changed
after we rescued
her animals and got them into safe quarters.
Many such stories will be told. At least four zoos
were severely damaged
along with at least one oceanariums. Hard to say where
the dolphins who
were evacuated ended up. Most of you are probably
upset about the sea
lion who was shot, but in disaster areas the incident
personnel are doing
the best that they can in really dismal situations.
We hope that the contaminated floodwaters don't rob
the coastal zone of
oxygen, if it does the ability to support sea life
will be hindered by the
fertilizer, decay, sewage and other "toxic gumbo."
I've placed donation links to three of the major
animal disaster relief
groups at my website. If you want to help, the best
way is to send
money. Donate to animal disaster rescue efforts
now at

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
It is hard to believe that it is August! I've been sticking
close to
home but managed to take a trip down to Los Angeles
to film a
segment for a PBS Nature special. Can't tell you much
more yet
at this time but it will air in November and I'll keep
you posted.
I also got talked into judging the Annual Fawnskin
Doo
Dah Parade. The silly event also claims to be one of
the
shortest parades in existence. This event will be followed
by the Blessing of the Animals on the 31st.
My interviews on the book are mostly done. I've obtained
some
photos and materials and hope to start making some serious
progress now. I've been busy with other deadlines and
am
a bit nervous about the progress but it should go well.
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month's question asked about your favorite topics
but I didn't get any responses! Are you all traveling?
FYI: I started a breaking news blog about animals.
The online journal
provides media and journalists with comments on hot
animal and pet
topics. It is syndicated online and allows people to
use aggregators (feeds) to have the information delivered
to their computers or Ipods. The
broadcast doesn't get caught up in spam filters like
many emails do.
The cool thing is that I also figured out how to do
audio
broadcasts, too. Not sure if it will pan out but it
was fun to learn and
I believe it will be worth the effort.
Check out the blog and my new resource site at
http://www.dianalguerrero.com.
Let me know what you think!
My question(s) for you for this month is really a request
Please post a comment to any of my online blogs. See

3. Critter Chronicles: Animal Only Search Engines
====================================================
I accepted the title of "Critter Columnist"
for a eight new "animal
only" search engines due out this month. So, I've
been writing a bunch of
articles on a variety of animal topics. If you have
any you'd like to see,
let me know. Otherwise, take a gander at http://www.animalsnet.com
====================================================
4. Gossip Rag: The Fawnskin Flyer
====================================================
My little town (population of less than 380) is an amusing
center of
small talk and gossip. I've been threatening to start
a gossip rag for
several months-and finally did!
I have to say that I have been laughing over it daily.
It isn't malicious
but it is amusing. Launched July 1st the Fawnskin Flyer
has readers
from all over the United States and Canada! Locally,
you can buy one
at the Fawnskin Market for twenty-five cents or view
it online.
All four of the first issues were sponsored and I hope
that trend
continues. Anyway, I hope you will go in and take a
look. The
online version can be seen at http://www.fawnskinflyer.com.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Did you try the fruit snack idea I sent last month? Hope
so. Well, despite the promises to send me the stories,
the elementary school never delivered.
So, sorry to say you won't get to vote on the best stories.
Too bad since
I was looking forward to posting them and even got Barnes
& Noble to commit
to prizes for the winners--in addition to the other great
treats lined
up.
Next, being an overachiever, I accepted the position
of Critter
Columnist for eight new animal search engines that launch
in
August. I'll let you know the names just as soon as I
get the
okay.
In the meantime, I've been busy with other projects and
finishing interviews for "Blessing of the Animals."
If that
were not enough, I moved my websites and have
to finish putting them up. Check out my business site: http://www.guerreroink.com!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month's question asked about your pet peeves. The
big one was
loose dogs here in the San Bernardino Mountains. My August/September
Petiquette column will cover the topic in depth, but here
are some highlights:
Leash Law
All dog owners in the mountains of San Bernardino
are required to abide by Division 2, Title 3 of the San
Bernardino County Code (leash law). Violators can face
citations,
fines up to $1,000 and jail time. Did I forget to mention
that this
doesn't include additional liabilities for damages or
punishment
for the disobedience of other county ordinances?
Forest Frolicking
On you next hike or camping trip, keep in mind that section
261.14
in the Code of Federal Regulations is the federal leash
law. Dogs must
be on a leash anywhere in the forest. Did you know that
camp hosts
can give dog owners the boot if they fail to adhere to
the law? Any
field ranger or law enforcement official can also issue
citations for
trouble in the forest, public day use areas, or campgrounds.
Animal
control can come in and cite people, too.
Contractor Crimes of the Canine Kind
Contractor canine crimes is my hot button due to the safety
hazards on job sites, unsafe transport and inconsiderate
behavior when visiting (working) in other people's neighborhoods.
Local law enforcement, animal control and the California
Highway
Patrol can handle these violators depending on the location
and issue.
Loose dogs are in violation of
1) trespassing laws when they roam on your property or
streets, and
2) the county wide leash law, and
3) property owners are also liable and citable for any
infractions and
misdemeanors by their contractors.
The California Vehicle Code 23117 requires that animals
be
safely restrained in the back of pick-up trucks and during
transport.
Animal control and the sheriff department is pretty helpful
on these
Issues but you can also call the county supervisor, building
associations,
and the better business bureau if you don't get cooperation
or
experience bad behavior from the contractor.
Fascinating Fact
YOU can issue a citation as an "arresting officer"
(often referred to
as a "third party citation" or "citizen's
arrest") and law
enforcement will back you up as the "enforcing
officer/agency." So, take pictures, document dates,
times and
incidents and you can stop the canine crimes. You'll get
a
subpoena to appear as the "officer" witnessing
the violation(s).
Judges are convinced by documentation
My question(s) for you for this month:
What animal topic (or trivia) do you find the most enthralling?
If you have any tips or hints to share on this topic
please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: July 4th Pet Noise Phobia Tips
====================================================
Since the Fourth of July is a trauma to many animals,
I thought I would
include helpful hints to help people avoid issues, escapes
and injuries
to animals on July 4th:
-
Keep your animals inside during July
4th and for
a few days to a week prior to the holiday. -
Make sure you have a tag with current
information
on your pet during this time. -
If you take your animal outside for
toileting or any other activity,
make sure they are under physical restraint via a collar and leash. -
Leave your pets safely at home instead
of taking
them to picnics or other holiday events. -
Play music or turn on a radio station
with soothing
music to help mask outside noises. -
Buy a plug-in Dog Appeasing Pheromone
(DAP) dispenser.
This permeates the air with a calming scent and reduces fear and anxiety. -
Keep your pet busy with activities or
chew items before the
height of noise making occurs. -
Visit your veterinary medical professional
and ask for melatonin.
This oral neurohormone often provides help for sensitive animals.
Use with the veterinarian's dosage recommendation and _don't_
try to do it yourself. - Flower remedies work on an energetic
level. Five Flower®
or Rescue Remedy® mixes may help reduce your pet's anxiety. -
Create a safe haven. If your animal
is habituated to a crate you
may want to provide access for security. Other options include the
bathroom, laundry room, garage, basement, or any other den area.
The room to choose is one where there are no windows to jump
through, or where windows can be blocked off and are too high
and narrow to access. -
Some animals want to hide and will feel
safe in a favorite spot,
like under the bed. You can create sleeping bag tunnel or similar
option for them. -
Plan a party and play instead of participating
in other events.
Making new traditions can be fun and helpful for your pet. - Consider boarding your pet at a professional kennel for the holiday.
Use simple steps to get you through the crisis. If your
pet has noise
phobia problems you should start your behavior modification
problem
right after this holiday.
====================================================
4. Book Suggestions: Harem & Courtesan
====================================================
When I facilitated the weekly meetings of the Alliance
of Writers,
I also scheduled author appearances. Twice a month a new
scribe
would brave the hills for a good audience, potluck or
lunch, and
the bonus of a small stipend to help cover their fuel.
Dora Levy Mossanen was one of my scheduled authors who
got
bumped due to repercussions of the fires and evacuation.
That
didn't stop us from becoming pals and she is one of the
members
of my online group. (Remind me to tell you about that
sometime.)
Anyway, her first book "Harem" was so fabulous
that I couldn't
put it down
even when some of the pages were missing!
Can you
believe that the first run of 50,000 was defective? Despite
the
rocky printing adventure, the book was fabulous (and yes,
they
reprinted them correctly). Now she has been labeled as
the
"Isabelle Allende of Persia." Pretty cool for
her!
A few of us are taking time off to make the trip to her
release
Party for her newest book, "Courtesan." The
text is hot off the
press and just arrived on my desk. Due to my project load,
I
am having to sneak time to read it and hope it proves
to be
as good as her first book, "Harem." I loved
"Harem" (and
encourage you to go out and get it. (You can support my
site and buy it through the link provided below.)
Anyway, the good news is that Dora extended the party
invitation
to (YOU) my subscribers. Don't miss her party at Dutton's,
a
prestigious book store in Beverly Hills. The release party
is July
10th and starts at 4pm. Hope to see you there!
You can order her books below:

====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
Last month's question asked about your experiences with
pet
insurance or wills. I did not receive any comments on the
wills,
but I did get a couple of responses on the insurance issue.
When I offered pet insurance to my clients in the early
1990's it was
still too early for people to see the logic for the service.
Now, due to
escalating fees for care and the more complicated services
like surgery,
chemotherapy and X-rays, more people are shopping for coverage.
Julie found out that her insurance carrier would not cover
a situation
with roots connected to a canine (breed) birth defect. Just
like shopping
for insurance for humans, you should read the fine print
and ask about
exclusions. In some cases you might want to have an attorney
take
a look at the policy or at least get some professional advice
on the
matter.
The largest pet insurance company in the United States
is VPI or
Veterinary Pet Insurance out of Brea, California. The group
covers 340,000 policies and has seen a sixfold increase
from 1995.
Pet insurance is still pretty new in the USA but it began
more than
30 years ago in Europe. Did you know that 12% of English
pet owners
have insurance for their animal companions while 49% of
Swedish pet
owners insure their companions?
******************************************************************************
Virgin Money Pet Insurance Factoid: Polls
in the UK reveal that the top
pet names there are Molly, Charlie, Max, Millie, Oscar,
and Poppy.
******************************************************************************
Pet insurance issues also arise in your homeowners' policy.
Many
companies will not insure or renew a policy if you have
specific
breeds as pets. In most cases the breeds considered a high
risk
include pit bulls, rottweilers, Staffordshire terriers,
Presa Canarios,
Akitas, Doberman pinschers, huskies, wolf-hybrids or any
dog with
an aggressive history.
About one out of four claims on homeowner policies involve
dog bites
and insurance industry estimates the total societal cost
from canine
chomps is $1 BILLION a year including insurance costs, medical
bills,
and legal fees. Insurance costs alone? The last numbers
available from
the Insurance Information Institute were for 2003--when
insurers paid
out $322 million!
If you have one of the insurance industry's red flagged
breeds, you can
get around some of them by obtaining the American Kennel
Club's (AKC)
Canine Good Citizenship certification. You can get the certification
through
one of the many clinics offered and more information is
available from the
AKC website. You can also invite the underwriter to visit
and meet your
pets to prove you have good dogs.
My question(s) for you for this month:
What are some of your pet peeves and questions related to animals that are not yours? (Barking dogs, leash law violators, unattended animals, etc.,)
If you have any tips or hints to share on this topic
please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.

3. Critter Chronicles: Mosquito Madness
====================================================
Okay, I am going to share this story with you because it
is errr, embarrassing
but also an amusing reminder that it is time to take some
pet precautions.
Most of you know that I live near the lake in the forest
of the San
Bernardino Mountains. As the weather has changed the bugs
have emerged. It is also time for gardening and those small
critters are hungry!
Due to the draught, I haven't had much of a problem with
anything like
mosquitos or worries about a proper garden. However I decided
to start
weeding on the hillside below my deck as the foliage is
getting thick from
all the precipitation last winter and spring.
Outfitted with jeans, a good shirt and gloves, I began
the project. The sun
was setting and the temperature dropped. I should have known
better.
My derrière was the highest point because I bent
down to pull the weeds.
Busy rummaging through the rocky soil, I was totally immersed
in the project--until my rump became itchy!
Wouldn't you know it-the mosquitos found the highest point
and a good
sized target to dive-bomb! They bit through my jeans and
left me with a line of red welts! The only other bite was
on my hand.
At any rate, my neighbor suggested I get the repellent
wet wipes for the
future. She uses them for her dog. A simply wipe over ears
and a dab on
the muzzle helps deter the little demons. Don't use the
product all over
an animal as they will ingest it when they groom or chew.
You can also
find homeopathic products or check with your veterinarian
for animal
specific pest deterrents.
The point of sharing my story is to remind you that it
is flea, tick and
mosquito season so take precautions for yourself and your
pets now to
avoid escalated problems!

4. Book Suggestions: Har-Money & Secrets to Lifelong
Prosperity
====================================================
On my weekend trip last month, I stopped off in Larchmont
(in Los Angeles, California) to meet with musician and author,
Heidi Baer. During a fabulous lunch at the Café du
Village,
HM Baer shared an advance copy of her new book
"Secrets to Lifelong Prosperity." This is the
companion book to her
fabulous Har-Money Cards and it is hot off the press.
Heidi Baer and I originally met at Book Expo America (the
largest
book industry event in the United States) a couple of years
ago. Our
Canadian pals got us together and we all frolicked through
the
evening hotspots of Los Angeles.
Har-Money Cards are designed for different uses.
I select a card
every day and ponder the message contained on my selection.
Each
card in the deck resembles a miniature hundred dollar bill
but contains
a different prosperity law on one side and more information
about the
specific principle on the other.
The exciting thing about her new book is that it is a more
in-depth
look at each prosperity law. The text elaborates on the
topic by including
activities, additional tips and insights on prosperity.
I hope you will
support her by ordering her cards or by ordering an advance
copy of
her book. Her first print run is small and she is changing
the cover so
the ones out now will be collectables!
Order
Har-Money or Secrets to Lifelong Prosperity from here!
Be sure to let Heidi know that you are one of my subscribers.
Even
if you don't order the book or cards be sure to stop by
and get your
free prosperity card "reading" online.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Snowflakes are falling and the ground is covered by a big
pile of wet,
white snow. During my short morning walk to the coffee house,
the
passing cars created great waves of slush, and torrents of
sleet pelted
my face. We locals are a hardy lot, BUT it helps to arrive
at a destination
and find a spot next to the roaring fire. Even better, I was
delighted to
find one of my favorite author buddies already among the morning
coffee group.
The weather is too warm for a real heavy snowstorm (it is
supposed to
be spring after all). We mountain folk know that we really
do have to
wait until after Mother's Day to do any gardening. My gardening
tools, pots and mulch ready and waiting. Soon
The 10th Annual Los Angeles Festival of Books was great fun.
Thanks to
those of you who stopped by. I attracted a lot of attention
without my
famous hat, but due to popular demand, I finally broke down
and paraded
around for a short stint. The next book hat promises to be
even more
fabulous.
I stayed with my Aussie author pal in Sherman Oaks and reconnected
with many other writer pals at the event. I also got to meet
some
talented and disciplined members of the Los Angeles Chapter
of the
Romance Writers of America.
I have lots of other news but I don't want to overwhelm you!
====================================================
2. Question(s) for the Month
====================================================
I appreciate the emails sent in response to April's question(s)
and hope
to include a few tidbits in the new book. The Anglican Church
in England
sent a packet of information related to services and celebrations
held during Animal Welfare Sunday, and the Golden Avenue Church
of Religious Science (GACRS) asked about how to make an animal
blessing event more successful.
In response to the GACRS: Most Blessing of the Animal events are celebrated on or around October 4th. The date is traditionally associated with the Feast Day of Saint Francis--but World Animal Day is the popular alternative celebration for the non-religious.
You can hold an animal blessing event any time, just don't compete with other popular events and avoid inclement weather periods. Other popular blessing dates are celebrated in conjunction with the Feast Day of San Antonio de Abad (January 17th) and Calle Olvera holds the annual Blessing of the Animals on the Saturday prior to Easter Sunday.
I'd suggest involving pet clubs, animal business, and pet service groups. They can help get the word out and bring in new attendees (and maybe new members). Blessing events are great fun and can be combined with a pet parade or other similar activities. They take a couple of times to catch on so if you set a date, try to be consistent and hold the event around the same time every year.
I will be doing special blessing events when my book comes out--maybe we can schedule something sometime after release date.
My question(s) for you for this month:
Do you have pet insurance, or a will, that addresses the needs of your pet in the event you cross over before your critter? What is your opinion on the topic? If you have any tips or hints to share on this topic please email them!
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: Pet & Animal Topics
====================================================
There are a few hot topics out on the newswires. I thought
I would mention the concern regarding pet microchipping.
The chips are inserted under the skin of your pet. The theory
is that
if your critter gets lost, and then gets picked up by (or
is taken to) an animal facility, that institution can scan
the chip and find the owner.
The problem is that the United States is one of the few countries without a universal (or global) scanner. Without one, not all microchips can be read. America's chips are also not compatible with the International Standards Organization (ISO), which sets the standard worldwide.
Many of the US encrypted chips can only be read by proprietary technology--which means that unless you have the scanner for the exact type of chip--you might not get the info you need. ISO compatibility is important if you travel with your pet. If you are in another country, even Canada, your pet's microchip could not be read if your pet gets lost.
What does all this mean? Make sure your animals have a license and ID tag on their collar. You don't have to have tags since some are sew or applied directly onto the collars now. You can also have some sort of tattoo placed on the under belly or inside the lip of an animal. If your pet is chipped, find out what type of chip--and push for changes to meet ISO compatibility.
Even if your pet is an indoor only animal you should have
an ID. Don't overlook the importance of having it. You only
realize how critical it after your pet is lost. This can happen
in times of disaster or accidental escape.

4. Book Suggestions: Some Writers Deserve to Starve
& The Writer's Retreat Kit
====================================================
My schedule has been so hectic that I have not had a lot of
time to read lately. But during the late night and early morning
hours of the Festival of Books, I managed to get through a
few and am recommending a few writing books this month.
"Some Writers Deserve to Starve" by Elaura Niles is a must for any writer's bookcase. (I have mine inserted between a few other amusing titles.) The title made me laugh and succeeded in getting me to take it off the shelf. This turned out to be a great strategy since the book is small and was amidst hundreds of other titles at a big book superstore.
When I actually got into the book, I found it to be a humorous and cut-to-the-chase handbook. As I read, I flashed back on my writing groups, on literary events I've sponsored, and on experiences I've had. Many novice writers contact me and I seem to repeat the same things over and over again. Now I can just hand those aspiring scribes this book!
Compact and clever, this is a quick read--but don't be fooled, it is also a comprehensive overview. Get it if you want to know the real story. Also, it will make for a great conversation starter when you have those literary types lurking around your bookcases during social events.

As a writer I have been blessed. I live in paradise and, at
anytime, can sit on my deck and gaze out over the lake, listen
to wind whistling through the trees, or admire the millions
of stars overhead. I can walk through the woods, sit and watch
birds and animals, admire the trout attempting to climb up
the creek to spawn, and glean inspiration and rejuvenation
from my environment on a daily basis. However not everyone
has the options I do. Judy Reeves has found a way to assist
any writer, living anywhere. This kit helps you to connect
with your muse while teaching how to create a retreat right
where you are.
"The Writer's Retreat Kit" by Judy Reeves is a gem. The attractive kit includes a book and a deck of cards. The prose in the book takes you on a gentle and innovative cruise. Your passage through a variety of expeditions teaches you alternatives to "traditional" retreats. Each theme offers four options and suggestions for additional nourishment. The work also provides exercises along with ideas for starting and ending ceremonies. The cards can be pulled for inspiration or direction, too. The combinations are endless.
Judy Reeves is a talented author who is a muse to writers all over the globe. In addition to contributing great and innovative programs for the writing community in San Diego, Judy was one of the first guest speakers and authors hosted by my Alliance of Writers. She blessed me by writing about the group in her, "Writing Along, Writing Together."
If you need a gift for a writer--or are a writer looking
for something innovative
and fresh--both these titles are winners!

Greetings! This month you'll find a new newsletter format with five sections. I hope you'll respond to the monthly question and enjoy the new direction of this forum. I don't want this monthly communiqué to get too lengthy but do want to include useful items of interest to all subscribers.

1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
====================================================
Most of you know that I stay home for the winter. The winter weather is a good time to write. Just like the critters surrounding me, I emerge in the spring to get ready for an active summer and fall. We all thought it was spring but then experienced a few nice snowfalls!
The trout are spawning in the creek, the bugs and bees are buzzing and the butterflies are on the quest for flowers. The chorus of birds every morning is unbelievable, too. Make it a point to visit the desert or the mountains in the near future-because the areas are stunning.
The BIG news is that I signed my new book contract on March
17, 2005
for a book scheduled to be released in the fall of 2006. I believe
the luck
o' the Irish will be with the project as a result. Here are
the details:
"Diana L. Guerrero, a resident of the Big Bear valley,
has just accepted a
contract from Sterling Publishing for her next book project
(the 2006 release date has not been set).
Sterling Publishing was founded in 1949 by David A. Boehm and expanded with the acquisition of Lark Books (1999) and Hearst Books (2002). In January 2003, Sterling Publishing was acquired by America's largest bookstore retailer, Barnes & Noble and is one of the world's leading publishers of nonfiction titles with more than 5,000 books in print.
Guerrero is a renowned author, speaker and animal expert. Seen on Animal Planet® and highlighted as a featured expert on NBC and ABC news, Guerrero has provided services for wild and domestic animals and their bipedal primates (humans) since 1978. Her last book, "What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild & Tame Creatures" has developed a grassroots following and is currently distributed throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India."
MORE: I also accepted another assignment scheduled for release in the spring of 2006. On this project I am a contributing editor to a professional book on crisis management for zoos and other animal facilities. The last project was released in 1999 and achieved international recognition so I am looking forward to this one, too.
AND, last but not least. The boys from Moe's Haven wrote me a song. It just arrived in the mail and it makes me laugh. Thanks guys--glad to have inspired a song!
Stay tuned!
====================================================
2. Question(s) of the Month
====================================================
Have you ever held a pet event such as a birthday party, adoption
celebration, bark or meow mitzvah, or pet funeral?
If you have, please respond to this newsletter and share a tip, special story, or written piece on the topic.
If not, have you ever attended a pet blessing or related celebration? Please email to share your thoughts or experience.
Do you any thoughts on this topic or do you have a favorite poem (pet, animal, nature) or prayer you would like to share?
Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
====================================================
3. Critter Chronicles: Pet & Animal Topics
====================================================
Some of my most enjoyable events are pet blessings and related
ceremonies. I was the guest of Olvera Street in Los Angeles
for their 75th Annual Blessing of the Animals. The event has
been an annual tradition since 1930 and Cardinal Mahoney was
on hand to bless all the attending critters. I had the opportunity
to meet many LA notables and had a
blast with all the critters. Thousands attended-it was absolutely
amazing. I look forward to participating again next year and
hope to post a few photos up on my site within the next couple
of weeks.
If you have not ever attended a pet blessing I encourage you to do so. If your pet is unruly you can always bring in a photo of your companion animal to be blessed and enjoy the festivities with peace of mind.
Some of you know that I have been in the news quite a bit over the past year and a half. I commented on the chimpanzee attacks at Animal Haven in Caliente, California and over 600 new visitors came onto the website daily to read them. If you want to read that story or view other reports on the incident visit: http://www.arkanimals.com/dlg/chimpanzee_escape_chimps_attack.htm.
If you want to keep abreast of hot animal news topics I'd encourage you to visit my website's breaking news section at http://www.arkanimals.com/Press_Room/breaking_news.htm. The page is updated with the latest news involving animals almost weekly. This month don't miss tips for making every day an Earth Day or comments on the National Pet Adoption Days effort.
Speaking of latest breaking news, I penned an article on the
controversy
related to the California Veterinary Medical Association lawsuit
against the City of West Hollywood. You probably heard about
the "pet cosmetic surgery" debate. The article will
appear in Vision Magazine this month and there are some valuable
resources included. If the issue gets more volatile you will
find it on my website in the breaking news area.
====================================================
4. Book Suggestion: The Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior
====================================================
Since I go through so many books each month it is often hard
for me to pick the one that stands out from the pack. Because
both writers and animal lovers subscribe to this newsletter
the selection can be a dilemma. This month I decided to select
an animal book trio that is both educational and unusual.
Released earlier this year, the Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior had to be a daunting task to put together. The three volumes provide an introductory overview on various behavior topics. I don't envy the editor (Marc Bekoff) who bravely tackled the task.
Anyone interested in animal related topics will find this three volume set useful. The up-to-date information contains contributions from many experts in a variety of fields. Entries include submissions from disciplines such as ethology, psychology, biology, veterinary medicine, behavior and others.
One major difference is that it includes dialog regarding animal emotions, awareness, consciousness and empathy. These have been taboo topics in the past. The other nice aspect of this work is the wide range of material it introduces. Regular behavior topics such as social organization, behavior patterns, animals as individuals and as a species, domestic and wild animals, and other related subjects, such as careers, are included.
The book is user friendly with reasonably sized articles, short sidebars and provocative essays.

1. New Hampshire Fans Reach Out
====================================================
One of the fun things that occurred this month was the arrival of an unusual CD in the mail. I didn't know who sent it, but the postmark was New Hampshire. It was plain (only adorned with an email address), with a photocopied jacket and F.A.Q.
The copywriting was funny. Matt Farley and Tom Scalzo are two
prolific
musicians who form the group, Moes Haven. They are also very creative
and one of their marketing ploys was to send their CD to people
they find interesting.
The duo has been writing music together since 1996--recording
more
than 500 original songs. Their claim to fame is their 24 hour
album and said, "Its release was marked by a poorly-attended
listening party at Farley's apartment in Manchester, NH."
The FAQ continued, "Right now they have so few fans that anybody who writes them is guaranteed to get a response. Heck, there's a good chance the boys might end up writing a song about you."
I really got a good chuckle. So, curiosity got the best of me
and I played it.
CE my bird really liked it. The perk is that she gets quiet every
time it plays. For those of you who have parrots-you know how
great that is!
Moes Haven's acoustical work reminds me of listening to some of my San Diego music pals when they first started at small venues like coffee houses. (Many are now really famous.)
Anyway, I visited the Moes Haven website and emailed them. Yes,
Matt
emailed me back. It turns out that they found me on the Internet
and liked
what I was doing so they sent me their work. The guys are currently
working on "my" song.
Matt said their songwriting didn't really take off until 2000.
"We found
ourselves writing song after song at a frantic rate. We had serious
songs, strange songs, funny songs, terrible songs, good songs.
Everything. We didn't stop to think if it was good. We just kept
going
Luckily, we're not looking to make a fortune, just
to get the word out there. For many years, we were the only people
who listened to our songs. It's still thrilling to find out that
others have listened."
I would highly recommend you visit their website: www.moeshaven.com
and support their creativity. They have done some other very creative
marketing pushes and I am sure they have more ingenuity up their
sleeves.

2. Pet Treat Recipe
====================================================
This pet treat recipe was sent in by a fan so I could share it
with my
subscribers. Hope you all will try it and let me know how it works
for you.
She makes them for her dogs but it looks like we all could eat
them!
INGREDIENTS:
· 2 to 3 Cups of flour, (I combine Brown Rice, Potato,
and Oat flours)
· 1 Egg
· Cinnamon (to taste)
· 1 Cup Pumpkin
· 1 Cup Canola Oil
· 1 tsp Baking Soda
· Raw Organic Honey (to taste)
PREHEAT OVEN TO 375 DEGREES
Cream together Oil, Honey, and Pumpkin.
Add Egg and mix well.
Add the dry ingredients.
Add enough flour until the dough is soft but firm enough to roll
out on a pastry board.
Roll out dough to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.
Cut with animal shapes.
Place on cookie sheet and bake 10 to 12 minutes or until firm
and golden.

3. Book: The Success Principles
====================================================
I've had the pleasure to meet Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen
both.
(I seem to run into Mark more than my fair share.) Jack's new
book came out recently and is called The Success Principles and
is written with Janet Switzer.
If you are in business or management, or want more from your life in general, I would recommend this book. Basically it is a text combining lots of the success principles many of the greats (Dale Carnegie, W. Clemente Stone, Napoleon Hill, etc.,) under one cover.
It offers 64 success principles and is a workbook full of wonderful
quotes from some amazing people. The book is a great resource
tool for anyone who wants to move into being their highest self-but
it is not for sissies.
ORDER The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to
Where You Want to Be
The Success Principles is one of those books you will want to
keep in your Library.

1. Tales From The Trips
====================================================
No travel this month--but lots of adventures at home! Many of you know how hard southern California was hit by storms. We were no exception and made the national news. Two of the three highways leading into our
valley were washed out and the local rescue agencies had to evacuate people from 200 cars trapped in the snow and ice a few miles out of town.
I'll spare you all the details but it has been challenging. The
good news is that the whole town worked together during the heaviest
onslaught. At
our monthly potluck many stories were told and laughter filled the
air. Needless to say this is why I don't travel during the winter!
2. Recent News
====================================================
For those of you unfamiliar with the nuances of the book publishing world-book negotiations are challenging and take ages to complete. The GOOD NEWS is that my agent presented me with a deal for my next project and I accepted it. I can't give you the scoop until we actually sign on the dotted line but two publishers were contending for the work. The work will have tips and tidbits for unique and fun activities for pets!
This year is already full of surprises like:
-interview on an ABC affiliate news program out of Seattle
-other stories throughout the nation on animal disaster preparedness
(and pre-disaster animal behavior related to the tsunami and earthquake
in Asia)
-feature in the lead story for a trilingual magazine out of Spain
and another out of New Zealand
-featured expert in a new book due out this December
-check out www.arkanimals.com for selected excerpts and tips.
If that wasn't enough the unexpected delivery of my book from India surprised me. "What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality" has a different cover and sells for 195 rupees throughout India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Want a glimpse? Check out the cover at http://www.dianalguerrero.com.

3. Book: Peace Like A River
====================================================
Words to describe this book won't do it justice. Let me just stress
that when you pick up this book you won' t want to set it down.
Filled with fabulous prose and a steady calm pace, this work will
take you on the miraculous journey of life in the Land family.
The author captures the subtle nuances of family and community in a time when life was simpler (1960's). Miracles, aspirations and challenges are intricately woven into this tale narrated through the voice of 11-year old Reuben, an asthmatic. Another character is Reuben's precocious younger sister, Swede-whose engaging western poetry and tales of the old west add delightful distractions in the scope of the main story.
Life changes for the family when Jeremiah Land (the dad), whose
faith and calmness remain consistent throughout the story, is fired.
Shortly after, ill-intentioned bullies invade the Land home late
at night. Davy, the older brother, kills the intruders and is
arrested. However he escapes before his trial and the man-hunt and
ensuing events will keep you enthralled.
Don't think the story is a tragedy, it is viewed through a filter so that you witness the miraculous. This is one book I don't think you'll forget soon.

1. Tales From The Trips
====================================================
The biggest trip was my jaunt down the hill with the
Moose Lodge Senior Regent on a holiday shopping spree.
Since I moved to this quaint mountain town, one of my favorite
community service efforts has been to shop for (and wrap) presents
for local children and nursing home elders during the holiday season.
This year the trip was an all day event that left
me exhausted but happy.
Our journey landed us smack in the middle of the holiday shopping
insanity down in the city.
However, in our quest for unique item requests we
discovered
that many of the other shoppers were doing the same thing! We met
people shopping for families in other countries, gathering goodies
for
disadvantaged locals, for military service personnel and families,
and for larger groups needing assistance. AND we did not meet
any grumps!
One lady even found an item fitting my request for
earrings (for a
105 year-old) and she took it upon herself to look all over the
store
until she found me so we could deliver the treasure to the senior
citizen.
As we enter into the New Year, I want to wish you
a positive 2005
and hope that you will take time in 2005 to engage in random acts
of
kindness. Be sure to "pay it forward" so we can all make
this
world a better place.
====================================================
2. Recent News
====================================================
The biggest news is that FOUR publishers are interested in my newest
(in progress) work. My agent and her office are busy, but we expect
to have some interesting news and concrete offers soon!
My humane holiday hints hit the newswires and hopefully made a difference for many pets. I am still amazed at the positive word of mouth that keeps What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality in the news and in the stores.
YOUR favorable mentions landed a radio interview that
aired in both the Los Angeles and San Diego markets and favorable
reviews appeared in one of the biggest pet industry journals and
in Best Friends magazine. Thanks!
====================================================
3. Book: Peter and the Starcatchers
====================================================
Destined to be a classic, Peter and the Starcatchers is the
page turning prequel to Peter Pan. Both young readers and
adults will enjoy this spin.
Set sail along with the orphan Peter. On this voyage you will meet the characters (and discover Barry and Pearson's cleverly constructed historical yarn) behind JM Barrie's classic tale, Peter Pan.
Young boys will love some of the disgusting habits exhibited by the pirates in this seafaring yarn of Black Stache and the crews of the Never Land, the Black Wasp, and the Sea Devil.
Young girls will enjoy discovering the magic prevalent
in the story as well
as Peter's friendship of Molly--and her role as an apprentice "Starcatcher"
and dolphin communicator.
In this action packed fantasy adventure you discover how:
-Peter's got his flight ability
-Mermaids evolved
-Captain Hook lost his hand
-Never Land got its name
-the mythology of Zeus and how the mythology of giant squid and centaurs weave into this story
-a few great names in history were influenced by the same magical
substance revealed in this book
-Peter's fairy materialized and became his companion.
