Happy Holidays! I am enjoying watching another big snowstorm
drop several feet of snow on my deck and hillside. It is nice and
warm
inside, but the birds and animals are scarce.
Stay tuned for newsletter changes in the New Year! I'll be including
reading
recommendations and interesting content each month. Be sure
to email me with topics or content ideas because I'd like this forum
to
continue to be interesting and useful for you.
Don't forget that I'll be sending you an email with holiday specials
(from a different email address) within the next week or so.
Have a great month and enjoy the holiday season!

1. Tales From The Trips
====================================================
November kept me home by the fire. The biggest jaunt was a drive
across the lake for
a block party event with three other prominent writers. Merchants
offered discounts
for locals and visitors alike. The day was filled with food, fun,
and laughter.
Afterwards, I joined author William Sarabande (aka Joan Cline)
and
some of my artist pals at a gallery reception. The collection features
local talent and
they were celebrating the recent expansion of the facility. Filled
with ceramics, watercolors, oils, photography and other works, the
place is a feast for the senses. They also tantalized guests with
tasty treats and beverages. If you are looking for a unique gift,
I can recommend you visit Big Bear's four galleries during your
quest.
I also attended the opening gala for the new library bookstore.
I didn't need any
more books, but wouldn't you know it-I came home with three more.
Honestly, I
am definitely a bibliophile! (I am only reading about 12 at the
same time, not to mention
the research reading for my new manuscript.)
Finally, one of the highlights of the month had to be the fabulous
dinner with
a regional manager for Baker & Taylor (one of the largest book
distributors
in the United States). Good food, great company, and intense conversation
definitely made it one of the most enjoyable evenings of November!
====================================================
2. December News
====================================================
The manuscript is coming along nicely. I unfortunately had to turn
down a
contract offer and subsequently decided to seek an agent. The good
news
is that I am now represented by a New York literary agency and have
two
other publishers interested in the new manuscript. So stay tuned!
====================================================
3. Pets! Column Comments
====================================================
Thanks to all of you who have submitted questions for the new column.
I received some more interesting questions about squirrels, cat
behavior,
and even coyotes! I will begin posting these columns online next
year.
You'll be able to access them from my website or this newsletter.
Teleseminars Coming Soon:

How to Solve Toileting Terrors (Cat: Litterbox Avoidance)

4. Online Writers Group
====================================================
The Alliance of Writers just celebrated four years of success! Each
November
I reassess and determine the direction of the group for the following
year.
What does this mean? In addition to workshops and teleseminars,
2005 will
include a new online writing group.
The 2004 workshops were very successful and I've had inquiries
(and
participants) from all over southern California. People from Arizona
and
Australia want to attend, too! So, in consideration of travel and
time
constraints, I thought it would be a good idea to start an online
group.
The group will not be moderated and will be free of charge.
Requests for membership will be handled online and applicants will
be
screened by the BBS Administrator. We are looking for serious writers
who need an intimate support community. Are you such a person? If
so, visit
http://www.allianceofwriters.com and apply for membership.
===================================================
===================================================
Have a great month and stay tuned for exciting changes next year!

The holidays are upon us! Below you will find some holiday hints.
I also invite you to submit your questions to my new column. To
do so just visit the BBS link located on the index page of my website
www.arkanimals.com.
I normally take a break from November through January to write. The winter is a great time for creative efforts (and reading by the fire) since it is COLD and the mountain roads contain numerous hazards such as unsafe drivers, rockslides, black ice, and more.
Please note that my web email address changes annually to reduce spam. If you are subscribed, just respond to this email I'll still get it in my normal box--but please note that my new web email has changed and is listed in this issue--it is valid immediately.
Have a great month and enjoy the holiday season!

1. Tales From The Trips
====================================================
Last month I participated in the WEHO (West Hollywood) Book Fair-it
was one of my top three events for 2004-taking first place just
above the animal blessing at the Church of Truth. It was fun and
fabulous!
First, I met some really dynamic people from the literary world and many of the city leaders at the author reception. The grounds were packed with booths filled with great books and food. Our panel, "The Passion of the Spirit" was VERY eclectic. The members represented a wide range of beliefs and backgrounds. The dynamic dialog kept attracting more and more people until the audience had standing room only.
Immediately after the panel we autographed our books at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore booth. I was kissed by a Muslim (actually two) and enjoyed visiting with the people who stopped by to chat and purchase books.
On the following weekend, the fabulous artist (and my fabulous chapeau maker) Cristóbal (AKA Chris McCormick) conducted his first show in Monrovia. I assisted him and support his efforts. If you have not seen his work you don't want to miss it! My other new artist pal, Krys was next to us with her fabulous dichroic glass creations. Both were featured on my website and can be accessed via the news section in the Ark Animals area of the site. (The latest breaking news is usually available via the handy link placed on the main index.)
Need the perfect holiday gift? I have some unique recommendations for you! Some are already up on the site, but I plan to send you a special email with direct links to personalized products you can order directly from the comfort of your own home-you'll support animals and artists through those your purchases.
The seminar by the fabulous medical intuitive Carolyn Myss was fun. She is one of the people I admire and this was the first time I was able to see her live and close up. A very entertaining speaker, I enjoyed her directness and humor. At the event I also got to meet several of the people who assist on my courses for The Learning Annex. (A great team of people!)
My presentation at Educator's Night at the Barnes & Noble in
Temecula, California was also a hoot. The place was packed-standing
room only again. Educator Appreciation Week honors teachers and
administrators with programs, treats, gifts, and large discounts!
My new 2005 programming for schools was well received. The idea
is to get kids to set goals so we can bring in unique programs and
animal ambassadors for assemblies. The new programs include sessions
on pet parenting, writing, animal etiquette, backyard conservation,
and animal careers. The kids have to achieve certain tiers (of sales
through their book fairs) to qualify for animal guests. You can
view my list of topics by clicking on the speaker link on the index
page of my website www.arkanimals.com.
====================================================
2. November News
====================================================
Make sure you check my schedule for the latest updates. I normally
stay close to home and write during the winter and am currently
reluctant to leave home! You can access my latest schedule from
the main index page of www.arkanimals.com or www.allianceofwriters.com.
If you are reading this at authorsden.com, just visit www.authorsden.com/dianalguerrero.
So far I've been invited to a pet event in Los Angeles in early November and for autographing over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Keep your eyes open--I may be convinced to venture off the mountain!
====================================================
3. Pets! NEW Column & Teleseminars
====================================================
Thanks to all of you who already submitted questions to my new column
on animal etiquette. The first one is already in press and will
appear in January. Many common questions to animal behavior are
listed on the www.arkanimals.com website in the pet section. You
can read up on the most common animal problems and purchase PDF
booklets to solve on the most annoying challenges right from the
site.
In 2005 I will be conducting teleseminars on specific animal behavior problems and pet problems. The project is in final discussions now. I anticipate being joined by other notable animal experts and having some great sponsors.
Participants will be able to email their questions to us in advance of the teleseminar. What is a teleseminar? It is a live seminar conducted over the phone. After you enroll you are sent the phone number and passcode. At the scheduled time you simply call in and learn right from the comfort of your own home or business! I will be offering the teleseminar on CD so you can still get a copy if you miss any of the sessions. I'll be happy to repeat sessions if there is a big enough demand.
The actual schedule will be announced shortly with dates and times. If you have a preference, just reply to this newsletter and let me know the days and times YOU could participate or would find the best. In the meantime, here are the topics for January.
January
How to Solve House Training Horrors (Dogs: Housebreaking)
How to Solve Toileting Terrors (Cat: Litterbox Avoidance)
Other topics being considered are (dogs) digging, barking, jumping,
escaping (cats) hairballs, scratching, escaping, (birds) feather
plucking, and screaming. If you have a specific topic you would
like to see scheduled, just drop me a line before the end of the
year.

====================================================
4. Winter Holiday Hints
===================================================
Holiday hazards are challenging and sometimes downright dangerous.
The winter season is full of holiday festivities and therefore the
holidays are important times to take special precautions for the
health and safety of pets.
During gatherings you want to make sure that animals are occupied with their own treats and activities. Baby gates or play pens can keep animals from getting underfoot while still allowing them to still be part of the celebration. Pets need to be part of the family activities, but safely.
Make sure you pets are mannerly and that your guests and family are alert to the need for restraint of food treats. Rich foods and inappropriate feeding can create health complications for household critters. Make sure you have appropriate treats for the pets and monitor the quantity. Alerting guests to the rules helps greatly. Unfortunately, many guests will not appreciate your drooling darling or fur additions on their good clothing. Plan ahead to avoid problems or fine-tune your guest list to pet people. Pets might also have their own party in an adjacent room or yard. Kids love company and may want to help petsit!
Holidays are NOT a good time to add pets to the household. There is simply too much going on and the holiday stress sets everyone up for failure and misery. It is a good idea to give special consideration toward animals that you are thinking of bringing into the home at this time.
If you want to give someone a pet for a holiday, use the clever humane alternative instead. First, gather the pet necessities for the new critter. Wrap each gift separately and conclude the gift opening party with a picture of the ideal pet and/or a pet adoption certificate from an animal agency or similar entity. Your actions will be fun and conscientious-and will build up the excitement and anticipation of the new arrival.
Need some ideas? You can get pet breed and training books (check out my recommendations at my website www.arkanimals.com), pet beds or housing, dishes, brushes, accessories, toys, and certificates for grooming and other services like training and veterinary care. Make the effort a family affair and search for the pet together. Research and planning will keep the pet in the home and make the adaptation easier for the family and the new pet. Your humane actions will also set a good example for kids and others within your influence. Instead of making an impulse buy, your efforts will encourage thought and dedication for the adoption of a new household member.
During the holidays remember that plants (holly, mistletoe, poinsettia etc.,) are poisonous to pets. Holiday hazards include candles, ingestion of inappropriate foods, glass and other ornaments, electrical cords, heated decorative bulbs, hooks, tinsel, and a wide variety of other decorating items.
Keep décor items out of reach of your pet or in places your animals cannot get to them. Don't forget that chocolate, alcohol, and caffeine can make your animals very ill and that in some cases, can kill them.
Taking a few steps to plan your holidays and the arrival of new pets can protect and save those critters and your sanity!

5. Guerrero's Holiday Recipe
===================================================
I'm not planning on including recipes every month, but this one
is SO good that I couldn't resist. An artist shared it with me and
so I thought I would pass it on
Ingredients:
Brownie Mix
Giant Candy Bar (Symphony is really yummy)
Glass Dish for Baking
Powdered Sugar or Other Decorative Topping
Optional: 1 Tbsp Vanilla
Follow the directions on the brownie mix box using only two eggs.
Add vanilla if you desire.
Place ½ the mixture into the baking dish.
Place the entire candy bar on top.
Cover with remaining ½ of the brownie mixture.
Bake according to box directions.
Let cool and top with creativity!
Warning: This will send you into chocolate euphoria or an all night
working binge. I recommend you only make it when you have others
to share it with-so you can get it out of the house before you eat
it all!

1. Tales From The Trips
=====================================================
September was filled with fun, visitors, and even a couple of weekend
adventures. It also marked the official start of research and work
on my new book (due out in 2006) and a new column scheduled to appear
in a local California magazine in 2005.
One of my best pals, Elivia Melodey (www.elivia.com) arrived for a visit. Visitors are good for me because each one requires that I take time off. I enjoyed her humor and we always seem to balance each other out. She had just finished a 21-day juice fast and so we munched only the best foods, juiced it up, and watched at least one movie every night.
If that wasn't enough, Elivia had me join her at the Whole Being Weekend in Idyllwild, California. The event celebrated its 30th year and is a gathering of spiritual leaders, healers, and other interesting souls. Elivia's concert was the talk of the weekend and we had a great time sitting in the woods at her booth and chatting with people. We also attended an interesting sound healing workshop with a Shaman visiting from Peru.
My other great resting event was a visit to my favorite little spa in Desert Hot Springs. Boy was it still hot! Even so, I rested in the mineral pools and had a few swims. I even managed a trip into the sauna. After a weekend filled with relaxation I melted into bed when I returned and the weather was a direct contrast. When the Santa Ana winds heat things up in southern California-Big Bear cools down. I actually had to light the pilots on the heaters and lit the fireplace to warm up the house!
Although I ended up missing the Men of Mystery luncheon, I was able to feast upon some great independent and foreign films at the 5th Annual Big Bear International Film Festival. I got to chat with Monikka Moreno (Left At Albuquerque) who was a finalist in the screenwriting competition. If you have not ever attended a film festival-plan on it. The creative energy and films are incredible. My favorites included: "A Night At Sophie's" and the short, "Play War."
The month ended on a high note of a visit with one of my friends from the pet industry. When we met her business was just getting off the ground. Now she is housed in a 10,000 square foot warehouse. Like many people I know, success has come after hard work, minimal living, and arrived when least expected. Other than chatting non-stop my favorite activity with her was moving from room to room in her luxurious home in Anaheim Hills-complete with its own movie theatre. Next time I am bringing the popcorn!
October is going to be a busy month and I'll have lots to report!

About the Instructor: Diana L. Guerrero's creative work has appeared
around the world. This adventurous and innovative pioneer consults
and lectures nationally on creativity, writing, and related topics.
Guerrero is the founder and facilitator of the Alliance of Writers,
a mixed genre writing group. She produces several writing events
and teleseminars annually and publishes allianceofwriters.com. The
Alliance of Writers Internet site features writing workshops, activities,
tips and resources for both novice and veteran writers.
=====================================================
4. October Tips:
=====================================================
Last month was filled with creative interactions with other talented
writers and business people. When writers get together they share
stories, trials, and tips. One of the most naturally talented writers
I know discussed her new critique group. She clucked about how great
it was to have her work reviewed by others in the same genre. She
went on and on about the different styles and weaknesses in her
writing--and lamented about how she had so much work to do to get
better.
I had to stop her.
This woman is one of the most talented writers I know--and she is oblivious to the fact. My comment to this is, "Anyone can write, but not everyone has talent." She definitely has it.*
Yes, you do get better over time. Yes, if you are persistent you will slowly get to where you are going. Yes, if you consistently work at your writing you will get published and by default (and hard work) you get better at getting published. But there are some people that are just plan fabulous.
Even so, we writers are always our own worst critics. But this woman, at this moment, and most all the moments I have known her, is a naturally talented storyteller. She has her weaknesses, but the world stops to hear her share her written word. I've seen listeners sit on the edge of their chairs, hold their breaths, and grin ear to ear with excitement-just because she is going to share one of her stories!
Am I wrong? Perhaps, but I don't think so. Great writers are not so common. She is great. She definitely does not know it, she has not been recognized yet, and maybe she is still too rough around the edges. Who knows? For the rest of us, well
Writers write. We are driven. It doesn't matter if you are a novice or a veteran-what matters is that you write and keep writing. Some people journal, write press releases, work on a website, construct a book, pencil a poem, or give birth to other projects. In the end, we all will work hard for the love of it, and in the end I hope we all enjoy our successes. Sometimes they are small and sometimes they are big.
She is reading this along with the rest of you. To all writers I say, "Own it." Own your talent and keep working like hell since it will be your turn when you are ready. I don't believe it is just the writing process or just clever prose-you have to be ready.
And on your journey make sure to sincerely compliment the writers
and authors you know--or that you admire. Be specific (and truthful)
and know that cheerleaders do our hearts good--and that we don't
hear the cheers quite enough.
So to all you writers I say, "Write on!"
*This quote and others are now in my seminar manual for the "Cover
Your Assets" workshop. If you have some witty wisdom or a quote
to share, feel free to email me with it and I'll try to include
it in my next seminar
all quotes are cited anonymously.

1. Tales From The Trips
=====================================================
Fall hit about two weeks ago. It must be my fault because just as
soon as I removed my feather comforter from my bed it got cold!
Although I did not list a whole lot of events last month-I ended
up doing more. Word has spread and I am getting asked to speak and
provide programs to more stores and other venues. The West Hollywood
Book Fair asked me to participate on a panel with some great people
in October. Visit my schedule page for details or stay tuned for
more news next month.
I've been sticking close to home after a trip down to San Diego to see my naturopath. At the moment I have completely changed my diet and am taking lots of supplements to get back on track. In the meantime, one of my local booksellers has taken advantage of my being close to home and my bibliophile nature. I've been assisting in the store and enjoying meeting book lovers from around the nation. I have to say that working in a bookstore does wonders for your knowledge of what is happening in the publishing world plus I shamelessly sell many autographed editions of my book!
One of my newest pastimes involves participating in educational teleseminars. As many of you know, I will be introducing some of my own in 2005 and maybe sooner. Some of the topics I will cover are: animal careers, how to solve animal behavior problems, a monthly animal training session, writing topics, legal essentials for writers, tapping into the creative well, and more. If you are not yet subscribed to this newsletter--make sure you sign up so you don't miss them.
My September special for new subscribers who are already authors and speakers-is the invitation to participate in a FREE teleseminar in the near future. Just email me with the subject line "subscriber interested in free teleseminar." I will email you with the information and get you hooked up with some dynamic teachers and professionals. If you are not subscribed to my newsletter yet-what are you waiting for?
For those of you who are already subscribed, you can qualify to attend the teleseminar for FREE by obtaining a new subscriber to this newsletter. Just email me with their information and the subject line, "referral subscriber for free seminar." Once their subscription is verified I will send you the invitation with the information!
Subscribers to this newsletter will also receive discounts on the
fee based teleseminars-so stay tuned!

your bond with animals and how to create a better life for yourself
through the spiritual lessons they share. Class participants may

4. September Tips:
=====================================================
The questions I am getting are all animal related. So I thought
I would spend some time this month discussing a timely wild animal
topic.
The August 24, 2004 issue of Newsweek featured the plight of wild
cats. Unfortunately they are not the only animals in jeopardy. Big
predators are known in my profession as "flagship" species
since they catalyze interest in conservation of the environment
where that particular creature lives. A reptile or slug doesn't
catalyze the same interest but is conserved (along with the habitat)
as a result of the interest in the high profile species.
There are lots of reasons why animals are endangered, but the biggest
lead back to human destruction and ignorance. Encroachment into
(and destruction of) the environment, a lack of understanding regarding
the daily impact that each human contributes, and the failure to
take actions that make a difference are just a few explanations.
Although I cannot always comment on the latest breaking news-I
try. If I can use my influence to interest the media and the public
with tie-in topics and tips for action, then the resulting articles
and actions can help
a little.
Unfortunately the dwindling habitat and plummeting populations
of species makes viable recovery a distant glimmer. Elephant populations
grow but cannot be sustained by the paltry reserves. Estimates on
population numbers for many species have been found to be too high.
In the Newsweek article, the estimated population for one of the
African lion groups was found to be 23, 000 less than a quarter
of what was estimated (100,000). The pessimistic predictions talk
about the great apes, pachyderms, and big cats disappearing within
the next fifty to one hundred years.
Traditional strategies for conservation no longer work--or have
not worked all along and have just recently been discovered to be
inadequate. When I was working with endangered species overseas,
I found that in most cases you must brave the political and economic
challenges found in the countries of origin AND find ways to work
within it.
Zoos, most of which started as private animal collections, do the
best that they can but often fall short of the mark for reintroduction
or successful breeding programs. Habituated animals do not make
good candidates for release and maintaining genetic viability and
diversity of a species is difficult. When species survival programs
have to ignore some of the subspecies of an animal in favor of ones
who might be saved--primarily due to space and resources--it drives
home the point. Space is a premium both in and out of captivity.
I tend to be an optimist and believe that with concentrated effort
and understanding that we can work toward better strategies for
survival of our fellow creatures. Wildlife corridors (also mentioned
in the article) are something that many field conservationists and
urban biologists are using. If we can more into better understanding
of our wild kindred and consciously making good choices in our day-to-day
activities then all of us can work together to change our world.
It all starts at home.
For instance, you can take just a few steps to help wildlife every
day:
· Recycle, reuse and repair:
o Push for recycling projects in your area. Sort your trash into
different container so plastic, paper, metal, and cardboard become
other products instead of ending up in the landfill. This reduces
the pull from the environment.
o Reuse your bags (both paper and plastic) and other containers.
Instead of buying the "throw-away" plastics reuse everything.
Take a minute to clean them and use again. Take your bags back to
the market or use a cloth bag for groceries and other shopping.
If you visit the coffee house daily, get a reusable cup instead
of new one every day.
o Repair items instead of throwing them away. We have become a society
that replaces rather than repairs. Push companies into becoming
more conservation oriented with your consumer power.
· Make conscious choices:
o Support sustainable agricultural. Your purchasing power can support
those efforts that are better for our earth. Organic and small farms
supply better products for our planet than some of the bigger operations,
imported products, and genetically engineered foods.
o Ask your local grocer to carry humanely farmed meats. Meat eaters
can create pressure for change in the dairy and meat industry. Although
vegetarians and vegans contribute through their choices, consumer-buying
power has a bigger influence and hits the pocket book and ears of
decision makers. Money and the demand for products talks the talk
that bends ears.
o Pick places to eat that are not abusive to the environment. Did
you know that many fast food products have been obtained from farming
on cleared habitat of endangered species in other countries, or
are obtained from other cultures with substandard work conditions?
· Home is where it all starts:
o Remember that what goes down your drain or in your trash will
end up in somewhere in the environment. Use care in selecting natural
products or some of the more traditional old-fashioned household
cleaners.
o Create and indigenous garden and grow native plants. The perk
is that you will also attract native species of critters!
o Use natural pest control and composting strategies.
o Keep your pets monitored so they don't impact wildlife by hunting
or by spreading disease through their elimination.
o Teach your children to care and involve them in daily activities
and efforts.
Visit my website (www.arkanimals.com) for hints and tips for backyard
conservation. There are articles on related topics, such as the
damage hybrid animals (crosses between domestic and wild animals)
cause to conservation. As more information comes in, readers can
learn about grassroots programs that make a difference instead of
steering monies into administrative and promotional funds of some
of the larger organizations. In the meantime get more information

4. Tips for August
=====================================================
1. Blessing of the Animals
=====================================================
July 24th and 25th were fun filled days. The annual Doo Dah Parade
took place on the 24th and we (The Women of the Big Bear Moose)
received a first place trophy for our creativity. Fawnskin launched
the shortest parade in the USA back in 1976. This year the parade
was an astonishing half an hour!
I marched along with the "Shady Ladies of the Big Bear Moose Lodge" in our finest duds lampshades decorated for the occasion. I was an entire lampshade and the creativity juices were flowing for all of us. Read more about the event and view photos from the link on the index page of www.arkanimals.com!
Pet lovers and a variety of animal pals showed up for my animal blessing at the Fawnskin Festival on the 25th. I started the day with a general blessing that included wild creatures and those critters not present. Then those who wanted individual blessings were invited up to receive them. We had canines, a parakeet, and a tortoise.
The festival was a nice way to spend the day and I loved the commute--a mere half a block! Noel Blanc (Mel Blanc's son and voice for numerous cartoon characters) humored me with some autographs for my niece and nephews and we took a few snaps. Local historians, vendors, and entertainers filled out the day, but my favorite event was the precious pets competition. Pets "bobbed for bacon" and played musical chairs-or something like that. They were too funny.
August is a slow month for me as I embark on the new writing adventure. "Blessing of the Animals" should be released in the spring of 2006. Stay tuned for news. In the meantime, send me your favorite quotes or resources!

2. August Events
=====================================================
Summer is here and the new book is in progress. My only events this
month are a book club session and writers club seminar. My schedule
seems pretty slow after the insane travel schedule earlier this
year.
August 12, 2004 (Thursday, Noon-2pm) Book Club in Big Bear, California
August 28, 2004 (Saturday, 10am-Noon; Luncheon to follow!) California Writers Club in Montclair, California
=====================================================
3. California Writers Club Seminar =====================================================
The fiction writing workshop was a great success. Writers commuted
from all over southern California to attend. We had a super session
with editor Mike Foley. If you missed his workshop stay tuned for
a repeat performance in 2005!
Don't miss "Covering Your Ass-ets: What You Need To Know After
Your Book Is Published." Discover the secrets behind successful
book sales and promotions. Learn inside tips relevant for after
your book is published. This interactive session will answer your
questions and reveal:
o What you can expect from your publisher/publishing partner
o Bookseller basics and alternative markets
o How to insure you reap an income in between royalty statements.
This seminar will be presented to the California Writers Club (Inland Empire Chapter) from 10am until Noon. A luncheon will follow. The meeting is open to non-members for $5. The luncheon will be held at a nearby restaurant immediately following the event. (You will pay the server directly for your order.)

4. August Tips: Careers with Animals or Pet Careers
=====================================================
Thanks to those of you who sent in your comments about what you
wanted to see in future newsletters. I will attempt to cover your
requested topics every month.
This month I'll touch on some of the basics regarding animal careers.
My office gets numerous calls regarding animal schools, pet jobs,
animal careers, and inquiries for help on related topics. One of
the more interesting calls in July came from a freelance writer.
The article will appear in an upcoming issue of a popular equine
publication. (Sorry, can't say which until it is released.)
First, let me share that if you are hankering for an animal career
please read the "Unusual Animal Career Series" I have
posted at www.arkanimals.com. This ongoing pet career and animal
career series discusses how to define your qualifications for an
animal career, how to go about exploring pet or animal careers,
and includes specific outlines for careers with animals. You really
need to start from part one and continue through each segment to
glean the most from it. So far there are eleven segments in the
series.
Second, do your homework. If you want an animal career and have
allergies to animal dander-well, it cuts down your options. Some
people want to make a lot of money and have unreasonable expectations
in that realm. Salaries vary from state to state, but the wages
are usually pretty low since the demand is high. You will need to
list what you are interested in and then do some research into that
particular position. There are some animal careers that pay well,
but work is often sporadic. Others require special education or
a doctorate to reap higher salaries.
Many people say, "I want to work with ______." (Insert
your favorite animal species or breed.) Animal professionals hear
this mantra day in and day out. Very few people go beyond the statement.
If you utter that mantra-Is that specialty a reality? How many opportunities
does an otter specialist really have?
Next, ask what do you want to do with animals? Did you want to train
horses? If so, what type of training? There are so many different
breeds and venues that you must define your interests more specifically.
Racing? Western? Dressage? Groundwork? Behavior therapy? Carting?
Tricks? Rodeo? Or do you just want to handle horses? Exercise them?
If so, are you up to mucking stalls? As people age, there are physical
limitations as reflexes slow and strength or health diminishes.
If you want a 9am to 5pm job, an animal career that involves working
with live critters is probably not something you should pursue.
In hands-on animal work you have to get involved in more than just
the role you desire. Animal jobs are a 24/7 type of position when
you care for creatures. How does your family feel about your time
away from home?
Anyway, as you can see there are lots of little things to ponder.
Once you define your desires more specifically you can begin to
obtain information that will be useful to you. You'll need to get
some hands-on experience, too. If you have done your groundwork
then animal professionals will be more open to chatting with you.
Eventually you may find that you will be offered an internship or
entry-level opportunity.
Remember, the more effort and energy you put into your quest the
better off you will be. Don't have your parents or pals do your
work for you. If you are too lazy to do the exploration yourself
you won't be the caliber of animal person most professionals are
looking for.
Have you seen the sticker, "no whiners?" We mean it!
Also, don't be pushy or rude. We pass the word-- trust me on this
one.
Thousands of people contact me regarding animal careers. Most do
not do any groundwork. When people contact me I am thrilled to help
when they have taken initiative. For instance, I received a cry
for help from China. This kid did all her homework, met the key
people, and defined what it was she desired, she just needed an
extra hand.
Understand that most other animal professionals do not have time
to spare. We all have the same challenges. So do your best to be
prepared, be professional, and be courteous.
If you are serious about an animal career you can book an appointment
with me from my website or from within the online animal career
series. Be sure to fill out the questionnaire after you secure the
appointment. I do charge for my time and expertise. If you prefer
a group event, you should consider attending one of my animal career
seminars or the new teleseminars coming in 2005.
Those who have attended my animal career seminars and have shown
aptitude will generally get a recommendation from me for an internship.
Nothing beats hands-on experience. I am always thrilled to hear
from my former students who are now working in the field!
Good luck and stay tuned for the next newsletter!

2. Teleseminars Coming Soon. Give Us Your Feedback!
==============================================
Thanks to those of you who emailed in your suggestions on the new
book project. We also received requests for tips, techniques, and
stories in upcoming newsletters. So, the August newsletter will
include many of those suggestions.
In the meantime, I just wanted to alert you to some upcoming events that YOU will be able to participate in without traveling! This fall we will be offering teleseminars on animal behavior, animal careers, and writing topics. Want to help get the ball rolling? Email us with those specific topics or people you want to hear from and the best days and times for you. We will do our best to meet your needs!
What are teleseminars? They are seminars that take place from your phone line. You call in and learn right from the comfort of your home. If you have questions to submit these can be sent in for inclusion prior to the event after you enroll. These cost effective seminars can help you get those answers you need right away.
Don't forget to let us know what you want to hear!
I can't tell you how excited I am about offering this option. This
month my teleseminar participation included a session with Jack
Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul) and other fabulous authors
and dynamic leaders in different fields. I love taking courses from
home and this month refreshed my education on guerilla marketing,
creating a brand, and some more. The one challenge is that my bird
tends to chirp during the seminars and has received numerous time-outs
as a result!

1. What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality
=========================================================
Last month found me at the Latino Book & Family Festival in
San Diego. Chase Home Finance sponsored my animal guest, "Juanita"
the wallaby. They also hosted a book signing after my stage event.
The big surprise was that we found a banner bigger than my door
with the picture of me with Camlo (the clouded leopard) and an insert
of my book cover promoting the signing. The festival hopes to have
me appear at other venues throughout the USA if they get a sponsor
to pay my way. I like that idea!
The winner of the best event of the month has to be Barnes & Noble in Riverside, California. I had a great audience and a fabulous community relations manager. Everyone bought a personalized copy of the book and stayed to chat.
Later in July, we will meet with another manager in the chain to talk about doing large events throughout schools in the area. My bookstore tour is about done and now it is time to focus in on appearances that will support my work and give me greater exposure.
So, since two of them are this month I hope you will join me! The Wildlife Festival in Griffith Park should be fabulous and the Blessing of the Animals should be a blast. See below for details.
If you are celebrating the Summer Equinox or Father's Day-remember
that personalized copies are the perfect gift for any animal lover
or spiritually oriented person. You can ordered directly from the
arkanimals.com website if your local bookstore doesn't have them
in stock.
=========================================================
APPEARANCE & BOOK TOUR UPDATES
I am booking events for the fall and winter now. Confirmed appearance
cities for this month include:
June 2-6, 2004 (Tuesday-Sunday, All Day) Book Expo America [Booth 1015] in Chicago, Illinois
June 13, 2004 (Sunday, 11:15 Talk, 11:45 Signing) Second Annual Wildlife Festival in Griffith Park, CA
June 19, 2004 (Saturday, 1:00pm) Barnes & Noble in Temecula, CA
June 21, 2004 (Thursday 6:30pm) Cat Behavior at The Learning Annex in San Diego, CA
June 26, 2004 (Saturday 12-2pm) Del Lagos Books in Lake Arrowhead, CA
June 27, 2004 (Sunday, 1pm) Blessing of the Animals at Pasadena Church of Truth in Pasadena, CA
Events for business groups, service groups, and fundraisers for
animal related groups are available. A fee schedule is available
upon request. If you get a chance, be sure join me for one of my
behavior or animal career courses!

=====================================================
2. Animals: Juanita the Wallaby
==============================================
Sometimes you need an animal to add a bit of flair to an event.
The Latino Book & Family Festival decided that was the case
and arranged to have a wallaby join me on stage. We did attempt
to bring in a Latino animal, but they wanted an Australian critter!
Go figure.
Anyway, we changed the wallaby's name to "Juanita" to fit in with the theme of the festival. ("Juanita" was also the star that attended the opening of "Kangaroo Jack," but I don't know the name she used for the premiere.) She didn't enjoy the heat and was more interested in watching the curtains blow behind us on stage-giving the audience a nice view of her backside and profile rather than her lovely face.
Most working animals operate under a variety of names when doing public events or media work. The next time you watch a movie or television show keep a close eye on the animals. Usually there is more than one working. The animal understudies labor on the piece alongside the main animal actor. The animals are often overlooked in the credits, but occasionally you will see their real names mentioned. Just like human actors, they get name changes and act for the particular role.
Rumors are circulating that the festival would like me to appear
at some of their other festivals. I'll be happy to do it if they
find a sponsor. Maybe we will even have some animal ambassadors
again. You can view the picture of Juanita, myself, Jim Sullivan
(Latino Festival) and Clara B. Araiza-Varela (Chase Home Finance)
on my website link from the index page--or at authorsden.com in
my news area.
=====================================================
WALLABIES 101
Wallabies are a small cousin to the kangaroo. Marsupials don't exhibit
a variety of facial expressions and are considered a primitive mammal
with high flight tendencies if startled. In Australia wallabies
and kangaroos are considered pests to ranchers, but they have some
very interesting behaviors and adaptations.
The Bennett's Wallaby, a subspecies of the Red Necked Wallaby, is actually found in Southeast Australia and Tasmania. In the wild these creatures are primarily nocturnal (active at night), but they can be lively in the early morning or dusk. They are herbivores and eat coarser grass than the sheep and cattle that they hang out around.
Wallabies have a digestive process that is ruminant-like. Their digestive system contains microbes (bacteria, etc.) that break down food to easily absorbed components. Wild animals never make good pets and in captivity they are prone to "lump jaw." They need a special captive diet that includes: rodent-lagomorph pellets, monogastric cubes, carrots, yams, hydroponics, browse, grass, mineral powder and salt blocks.
These wallabies will live up from 12 to 15 years in captivity and will weigh from 30-50 pounds. Females mature from 1-1.5 years while males mature 1.5-2 years of age. Another unique adaptation they have is "embryonic diapause." When a female becomes pregnant she can breed again, but that embryo will stop development until the other matures and weans--or dies. So, the female can give birth later without breeding again. Some refer to this as delayed implantation.
When born, the premature baby is the size of a kidney bean and
actually worms its way up from the birth canal up into the pouch
through the stomach fur of the mother. Once in the pouch, it latches
onto the teat and continues development. The joey, the correct term
for the youngster, will eventually meander out around five to six
months of age, but hop back in when threatened. It looks funny when
all you see the rear end and tail protruding from the pouch after
a headfirst dive back into safety! The joey continues to nurse up
to maturity.
This particular wallaby species is primarily solitary, but will
hang out with others occasionally. Other species form "mobs"
(the correct term for a group of kangaroos or wallabies) with social
hierarchies. Hunting permits are issued on these animals in their
native countries. Their hides are used for souvenirs and their meat
is popular for dog food.
Although these animals prefer to flee, they will use their tail
as a kickstand to keep their balance and kick out with their hind
legs in a confrontation. Larger animals, like the kangaroo, can
actually disembowel their enemy using this method. Although you
don't see it too often now, some of you might remember, "boxing
kangaroos." In the past the activity was used as entertainment
since the sparring behavior of the animal mirrors the boxing movements
of humans.

1. What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality
======================================================
Is it redundant to say how well the book is doing? Now the young
adults have found it and I've been receiving fan mail and emails
from all around the country!
The San Bernardino Sun feature article came out on April 2nd and generated many phone calls and orders for the book from all around the county. I'll be doing some local events this month and look forward to shorter travel days.
The LA Times Festival of Books was fun, but very hot. I did two appearances and autographed copies at my publisher's booth. The Times and other media sources took pictures and video of me in the safari hat, but I didn't get a chance to check if they appeared anywhere.
The first royalty statement arrived in the mail and I was surprised to see how fast the advance is being paid back. When you write a book you accept an advance against the royalties. This means you only begin to see the money once the advance is paid back. I didn't expect anything for about 18 months, but it looks like I will be seeing some financial rewards in the near future! Royalties are a complicated topic and better left for a workshop or writing discussion.
Touring has taught me a whole lot. I've been asked to speak on the topic to the California Writers Club in August and am working on a book tackling the topic. I head out to Chicago in June and hope to find a buyer for Expressive Elephants and Chattering Chimps. It gets tiring, but there are also some great rewards. I love meeting the kids and people whose lives have been deeply touched by the book. That makes it worthwhile.
If you want to help promote the book, just visit Oprah.com and send in an email asking for a show about animals and spirituality. I've already contacted them suggesting the show and will be in the area with authors of books tackling the same topic. You can mention the book by name or Book Expo America.
If you are celebrating May Day or Mother's Day-remember that personalized
copies are the perfect gift for any animal lover or spiritually
oriented person. You can ordered directly from the arkanimals.com
website if your local bookstore doesn't have them in stock.

2. Animals: Missing My Clyde
==============================================
Grieving over the loss of an animal is something that comes in waves.
It has been two years since I lost my Clyde. April was tough because
of it. If you have not yet read my book, the dedication is to this
loyal dog. The Afterward describes the end of his journey here on
earth
and the most painful day of my life thus far.
The emotional swell rose and broke when Clyde's pal (of more than twelve years) ran out to the truck to look for him when I arrived at the beach house. Oso had no way of knowing his pal was gone. A big lump rose in my throat and tears filled my eyes as I witnessed this canine's simple act of searching for his pal.
Clyde was in my thoughts every day as I tromped up and down the beach. I missed him splashing through the surf and remembered when I taught him how to body surf so that he could play in the waves without getting tumbled. He used to happily run after the birds to get them to fly and would check back to see that I was watching-with that happy smile on his panting face.
Sticks had to be picked up and thrown in the surf, and of course he had to get everyone he met to engage in the game. He would dig holes in the sand looking for treasures, and begged to stay as we trudged back after hours on the shore. He and Oso would sleep at opposite ends of the couch like bookends upon our return. Sometimes they would snore.
I enjoyed my stay at the beach, but it was a tough two weeks. It was hard to leave Oso knowing that I probably won't see him again either. His time remaining here is short since he is at least 14 years old. All his canine friends have passed away, it must be sad.
Do you really recover from the loss of a loved one? I don't think so. The passage of time seems to help reduce the pain, but the absence is tough to endure. People always ask me if I am going to get another pet. They must think it is an answer to the loss, but it isn't for me. I don't anticipate adding another pet to my household anytime soon-especially with my travel schedule.
For now CE is my travel companion. She chortles the journey and
handles the different places we visit well. Now people expect me
to bring her each and every time! At the moment she is in the breeding
season and not the most charming parrot to be around. However, I
would miss her if she was gone. She can really drive me crazy, but
then so could Clyde.

=====================================================
3. Summer Snake Precautions
=====================================================
Out on her porch in the fading light, Joy fought the temptation
to move the black hose to another part of the garden. This was fortunate
because if she had grabbed it, Joy would have been in for a nasty
shock--and a painful bite. In reality the outline was not a hose,
but a large and darkly shaded specimen of the southern Pacific Rattlesnake
(Crotalis viridis helleri).
The Southern Pacific Rattlesnake is common throughout the local
region and dwells in all types of habitat--except desert. Adjacent
areas do possess other species of Crotalids including: the stunning
Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus rubber) found in the Pioneer Town
area; the more aggressive Mojave Rattlesnake (Crotalus scutulatus)
dwelling in lower elevations on the northern slopes; and the adeptly
camouflaged Spectacled Rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) residing
in the rocky areas of Cactus Flats.
While the furred and feathered creatures of the woods capture the imagination of hikers and anglers adore the scaled inhabitants of our waters, our scaled friends of the forest have not met with the same type of adoration. This is unfortunate since these creatures are very specialized and intriguing animals. Their role is that of a friend and not a foe.
Pit vipers, the family to which these rattlesnakes belong, are highly adapted creatures. Between the nostrils and the eye are sensory organs. The pits detect heat and transmit information to the animal in the form of a heat or infrared image. This allows the snake to sense temperature gradients (as fine as a 1/100 of a degree difference) even in the dark.
A snake will pick up additional information about the environment by flicking its tongue out. The forked tongue helps the animal distinguish the origin of scent particles more accurately. Each portion acts like a directional beacon to the left or right. These adaptations help the snake accurately strike tasty morsels, and to avoid what is not.
These rodent managers can be identified by specific characteristics. The rattlesnake sports a thicker heavier build than non-venomous snakes, and is identified by its triangular shaped head. The broad temporal region is an adaptation and houses the venom glands and is a distinguishing feature that contrasts against the narrower neck.
Crotalids also sport a thicker blunt tail that is tipped with a rattle. The rattle is formed of several hollow interlocking segments of keratin material. When the rattlesnake vibrates its muscular tail, the segments bounce against each other and create the buzzing sound that signals a warning. Old folk tales state that you can tell the age of the snake by the number of rattles, this is not true. Snakes get an additional rattle each time they shed, which can be several times a year, and the rattle segments can break off at any time.
Rattlesnakes exhibit other unique differences. Don't be threatened by the unblinking stare and haunting vertical pupils, snakes simply have clear eyelids and don't blink. They are also ectothermic and have to manage their body temperatures through the environment and their behavior. For this reason these creatures are active during the day when the temperatures range from 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature rises, they may become active at dawn, dusk, and even at night.
Unlike constrictors, rattlesnakes kill their prey by injecting venom with nature's original hypodermic syringe--hollow fangs. When the snake has its mouth shut the teeth are up against the palate, and when the mouth opens for a strike, the fangs swing forward, penetrate, and inject the noxious infusion.
The toxic brew varies from species to species. Hemotoxic and proteoplytic venoms affect blood and tissues, while the neurotoxic type attacks the nervous system. Fortunately for humans, the local snakes prefer to stick to small prey mammals. Their services help control escalating rodent populations and the diseases spread by the furry pests.
One of the biggest local snake fans is Dr. Stephen Bush of Loma Linda Medical Center. Enthralled with reptiles since his youth, he has combined his passion of herpetology with his medical career and is widely known as one of the top envenomation specialists in the United States. In addition to conducting studies on venomous bites and publishing numerous papers on the topic, Dr. Bush believes in preventative education and spends time educating kids and other agencies about snakes and snakebites. He is also the star of Animal Planet's® Venom ER.
Although snakebites are a concern, snakes would rather avoid people. In 2002, there were approximately three dozen local rattlesnake bites treated at Loma Linda. This year the numbers have increased, but are small in comparison to visitor statistics. The majority of bites occur when people harass snakes, when people have been drinking and unwisely decide to pick up a snake to show off, or when people are unaware and grab or step on a snake--and it bites defensively. These snakes prefer to flee rather than strike.
There are strategies to living successfully with wildlife. Even inquisitive pets can be taught to detect and avoid rattlesnakes. Patrick Callaghan, an animal trainer in Norco, provides snake proofing workshops for pet owners each year (March through September). These training sessions are recommended for those with dogs, horses, cats, and llamas.
Michael Weeks, founder of Snake Removal, has over thirty-three years of reptile experience. He and his team of specialists have been providing snake removal services and consulting to homeowners, businesses, and other agencies throughout the United States since 1992. When asked for tips Weeks said, "Reduce your risk by educating yourself; take precautions, and prepare a plan." Dr. Bush added, "Every time someone interacts with a venomous snake it is risky." So what can a person do to reduce their risks? Weeks and Bush suggested the following:
To reduce snakebite risk:
· Be aware of your surroundings
o Hike with a walking stick and probe ahead
o Look before reaching over or climbing on rock piles, ledges, or
outcroppings
o Be alert around debris piles, abandoned buildings, and other snake
habitats
o Inspect for snakes before entering the underbrush or shaded areas
· Wear leather ankle high boots and long pants for protection
when hiking
· Hike with a partner when possible
· Stay on trails
· Use a flashlight and caution at dusk and night
· Learn more about snakes
· Have an emergency plan for bites
Home and garden snake proof tips:
· Eliminate "snake magnets"
o Remove bird feeders or move them away from house
o Feed pets inside
Rodents are snake snacks and outdoor animal food attracts them
· Reduce cover and debris around your home and garden
Shrubbery, wood piles, and high grass provide ideal habitat for
snakes
· Visually check your area before letting kids and pets outside
· Cover, close, fill, or screen vents, spaces, holes, cracks,
and other openings
Venomous snake interactions are a risk at any time, if you encounter
a snake:
· Stop
· Back away or give it a wide berth of at least four feet
or more
· Leave an escape route for the snake
Dr. Bush has been successful in removing snakes from his yard by using a large rubber trashcan with a long shovel or stick. "Walking them to another area nearby is preferable to killing it or having another snake move into the area. Even a dead one can be like handling a loaded gun since it can still envenomate." Bush experiences success in moving snakes away from him on the trail, too. "A snake that is unwilling to move off the trail can be encouraged to do so from a distance. I just toss gravel near the snake to persuade it to move away."
If bitten by a rattlesnake, don't panic and don't delay. Call 911 and get to Loma Linda Medical Center. Symptoms of a rattlesnake bite can include: fang marks, pain, swelling and discoloration in the bitten area, tingling around the mouth, nausea and vomiting, weakness, dizziness, and sweating.

Spring has sprung-or should I say summer is here? The forecast
is predicting some rain this week, but so far it has been unseasonably
warm. One of the reasons I love living in the mountains is that
the weather is much cooler than the surrounding areas. We enjoyed
70 degree weather during the last week when temperatures in the
"flatland" were soaring over 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The bald eagles have left for the season and now we are waiting
for the ski resorts to close and the lake to open up for boating,
fishing, and water sports. The forest should be open for hiking
and camping, but the draught remains a serious threat so who knows.
Even though we received some precipitation this year, it is far
short of what we need.
You may have heard that we barely escaped the prescribed burn that
got out of control. Close to 400 acres burned. Although the forest
service made statements that it only burned a few acres outside
the perimeter, what you did not hear was that it burned the whole
area in one day. They intended to burn the whole acreage over the
period of a week. I could see the flames leaping up over the ski
resort.
Unfortunately there is no easy answer. Poor management decisions
over many, many years, the politics of multiple agencies failing
to agree, and a shortage of human power make it a precarious situation.
Locals are planning on having evacuation items near the door, but
if a big fire hits things will not be good.
It has been great meeting many of you at the events. I appreciate
your help and continual support through book sales, writing event
participation, and referrals. These activities make it possible
for me to continue traveling.

ANIMAL BOOK IS GOING WILD AGAIN
The sales of What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring
Lessons of Wild and Tame Creatures picked up this month. When I
talked to the sales manager at SkyLight Paths he said that over
500 have been shipped to fill March orders. To keep this in perspective,
he said that some books never hit that number in a year!
Although I stayed home this month to enjoy some of the snow, I also began touring again this last week. I'll be on the road a whole lot and although I won't be doing so many bookstores, I have some interesting events coming up and I hope to land some sponsors soon since I am traveling hundreds of miles every week and am in front of lots of people and in the media.
Speaking of media, the article mentioning What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality came out in the Wall Street Journal on March 10th. In addition, the San Bernardino Sun interviewed me for a feature, and the local papers splashed a nice article about some of my upcoming appearances last week. This month Edgar Cayce's Association for Research & Enlightenment is featuring the book and so is the 1st Editions Book Club.
Remember: Personalized copies are the perfect gift for any animal
lover or spiritually oriented person and can always be ordered directly
from the arkanimals.com website if your local bookstore doesn't

2. Animals: Delinquent Zebra
==============================================
His eyes were a deep brown, his body taut, his energy high and when
our eyes met
it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, his high levels of testosterone
make him
dangerous to all those he encounters which is why I was introduced
to him.
This magnificent creature is a teenage Grevy's zebra. The stallion
is responsible for
severe damage to his holding area--and for the injury of two humans.
He is currently isolated from others in his location due to a larger
plan which prevents propagation until a later date.
The captive populations of Grevy's zebras are involved in a species survival plan. The cooperative effort between zoos helps to keep genetic viability within the captive population in the hopes that it will contribute to the larger goal of global conservation of the species. Habitat loss, disease, and other challenges are impacting animals and their environments worldwide.
My love affair with animals usually involves my meeting the biggest delinquents around. People call me the animal lady, the animal shrink, the animal therapist, but my official title is animal behavior consultant. Although I train animals to behave in pet homes, I am known internationally for my column on captive animal issues from within animal facilities of all types.
This wild life is full of adventure as I meet animal and humans from all over the world to help get them onto the right track. Better animal behavior takes a lot of work and this zebra is no different.
As a youngster he was spoiled by staff--who failed to recognize that he was a wild animal and not a pony. As an adult, this behavior escalated. The result is this animal learned to scream, kick, and batter his body against the fencing in response to the appearance of humans. When he displayed his behavior upon my arrival, I interpreted frustrated attempts of a neck wrestling behavior common in zebras and accidental reinforcement for inappropriate behavior (aggression) instead of cooperative or calm behavior. My suspicions were soon confirmed when I witnessed staff interactions.
After two hours of interactions with me, the animal showed great
improvement. The zebra stood quietly and gazed into my eyes. He
learned to be quiet to receive attention. I have since given the
zoo my assessment and am waiting to hear if they will move forward
with me or not. I'd love to train their staff and this smart, energetic
animal-he needs school like most delinquents I know.

3. Animals: Safari time! Ark Animal Shirts
=====================================================
SAFARI TIME!
Join me on August 2, 2004 for an animal adventure trip with an author
to the Costa Rica Rainforest. Plans for the new Africa trip are
still under discussion for 2005. Here is an advance preview of the
August 2004 trip:
Tropical foliage, striking birds, exotic animals and thermal hot
springs--these are just a few of the delights you will find on a
journey to the tropical rainforest with author, Diana L. Guerrero.
The flora and fauna are absolutely stunning. Visitors are surrounded
by lush vegetation and see hundreds of species of orchids, bromeliads,
ferns, helicons and many other plants. The biological diversity
includes animals, too. Monkeys, sloths, kinkajous, opossums, and
a wide variety of birds inhabit these forested areas. If you ever
wanted to explore the rainforest this is trip you will want to start
with.
Poas Volcano National Park is one of the first stops. The deep
blue waters contrast with the vivid greens of the tropical forest
that overlook it. Volcano Poas last erupted in 1978 and is one of
the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica. It is close to San Jose
and lush forest surrounds it. But this part is not the only one
to visit. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, Puerto Viejo de
Sarapiqui, Braulio Carrillo National Park, and Tortugero National
Park are a few other settings that this journey contains to help
quench any cravings for the exotic.
If all this sounds to good to be true, it isn't. Soon, animal book
author and animal expert Diana L. Guerrero will be embarking on
a tropical treasure hunt for rainforest inhabitants with a select
group of travelers. The trip starts from several US airports. Upon
arrival into San Jose, the group will nestle into the Hotel Parque
del Lago before embarking on the tropical treasure hunt.
The next day calls for an early start after breakfast, when Guerrero
& Company will join the guides and journey to Poas Volcano National
Park. They will glimpse the steam escaping from vents adjacent to
a lake deep within the central crater of Poas Volcano. The surrounding
areas differ drastically. There is a moonscape crater area, and
in contrast, intensely green and heavy foliage. The inactive crater
pool, glistens like royal blue and green gems and can be reached
by a trail walk that winds through a lush, dwarf cloud forest. In
the afternoon drivers will take the adventurers through the rugged
Tilara Mountains to the luxury of Monteverde Lodge.
If that is not enough, the following day's adventure takes place
in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve bursting with a rich diversity
of plants and animals. It is one of the best-known wildlife preserves
in the world. A naturalist will guide the group of travelers through
this beautiful sanctuary on a well-maintained trail and scout for
the Resplendent Quetzal, only found in the high forests of Central
America. This expedition will be followed by a visit the Monteverde
Butterfly Farm to see and learn about the life cycles of these insects
and to witness how conservation efforts like these help support
the rainforest and the indigenous people.
Day four will find the journeyers moving out of the Tilaran Mountains
towards Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. Costa Ricans spend a couple of
hours at lunch and the stop for midday morsels include a unique
opportunity to indulge in samples of the local cuisine. Eventually
the group will arrive at the comfortable cabins sitting in the midst
of the rainforest canopy. Another endearing quality at the Selva
Verde Lodge is that the walkways lead us from the cabins in the
canopy to a breathtaking riverside dining room.
If these adventures have not satisfied the toughest traveler, the
boat trip on the fifth day will! There is nothing to compare with
an introduction to the wildlife of the Atlantic lowland rainforest
by boat, followed by a drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park
for a bird's eye view of the tropical rainforest on the Rainforest
Aerial Tram. Gliding through the forest canopy (in gondolas) will
give the group a range of views from ground level to as high as
120 feet over the forest floor. Later in the afternoon there is
time to walk the trails and explore the many plant and animal adaptations
for living on the sheltered and dark forest floor.
As the tour continues on the subsequent day the group will travel
to the coast for a ride along the inner coastal waterway to Tortugero
National Park. This park protects a unique series of natural inland
waterways and supports various species of wildlife. Keen spectators
might view turtles, crocodiles, sloths, howler monkeys, spider monkeys,
or capuchins. There will be brilliant birds and colorful insects
that can be spied gliding overhead, too. Night quarters are the
exotic and fabulous jungle accommodations of the Tortuga Lodge.
Situated on 125 acres of land, it sports 15 acres of beautiful gardens
surrounded by rainforest. Dinner at the riverside dining room will
be followed by a night walk in search of a few of the fabulous nocturnal
critters of the forest.
The final two days of this fantastic adventure (unless visitors
opt for the great excursions) will be spent exploring the coastal
areas and waterways. Tortugero is famous for being the largest nesting
area in the Caribbean for the endangered green sea turtle. The wildlife
viewing will continue with glimpses of other birds and mammals.
Perhaps the group will spy all six species of New World kingfishers
manatees, or the gar that reside in the area. The boats will take
the group across the river to the airstrip for a chartered flight
back to San Jose. After checking in to the Hotel Parque del Lago
there is always time to shop or explore the capital city. Visitors
will have time for an enchanting evening free for exploration or
exhilarating dining.
Unfortunately, all enchanting explorations must end. Some of the
group will return home, but others might stay for some additional
adventures with Diana L. Guerrero. The choice is open to a select
few!
Prices are more reasonable than you think and include air, meals,
and accommodations. (These fares do not include optional insurance
and extension fees add $220 if you wish to extend your trip.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I intended to slow down for February and March due to weather restrictions,
but I still managed to have a few exciting adventures and have booked
some great new events for later in the year.
It looks like your prayers paid off! We had several days of winter
storms. Although unusual, the snow fell for three days and average
about four inches per day, then we got a short break followed by
a two foot dump while I was gone this weekend, and another storm
is on the way! The only challenges were the big ice boulders that
blocked my parking pad and the heavy tourist traffic upon my return.
The plow manages to deposit huge quantities of snow and walls me
off. On my way back the hills were covered and tall walls of snow
shielded the road--and my clean truck is now covered with road grime
again. The good news is that the lake level is rising and the trees
seem to be uttering sighs of relief as they soak up the moisture.
It has been great meeting many of you at the events. I appreciate
your help and continual support through book sales, writing event
participation, and referrals. These activities make it possible
for me to continue traveling.

======================================================
ANIMAL VOICES, PSYCHIC EXPERIENCE, SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS
What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons
of Wild and Tame Creatures is still attracting a lot of attention.
I was sad to hear that the assistant publicist who was working with
me is moving on to new pastures, but the good news is that I get
to torment Shelly again. Shelly Angers and I met in New York-she
is just FAB.
On February 20th I participated (via phone) on Animal Voices, a
coop radio program based in Vancouver, Canada. They asked me some
entertaining questions about animals and we chatted for about a
half-hour. I had a bunch of people subscribe to the newsletter following
the show-so welcome faithful listeners!
The cable networks have been quiet since receiving my tapes-nothing unusual. I went down to film the Time Warner/Cox Cable show this week, despite battling a sore throat and feeling under the weather, it went well. The poor hostess was sick, but she got very animated for the interview. The set was closed to any visitors, but the crew swamped me afterwards and swore that I was the best guest they had ever had! In fact, another show producer who was attending asked me to come back to film an episode with his production-only his reaches 9 million viewers! I'll post when the Psychic Experience show appears in San Diego and will keep you updated on the news regarding the next filming session.
Finally, a new review on the book comes out in the April edition of Dog & Kennel. Thanks very much to editor Rita Davis for supporting the book!
Remember: Personalized copies are the perfect gift for any animal
lover or spiritually oriented person and can always be ordered directly
from the arkanimals.com website if your local bookstore doesn't
have them in stock.

APPEARANCE & BOOK TOUR UPDATES
The fun news is that I will be judging an Easter Pet Parade in April.
The perk is that I will ride on a fire truck to the seating area
for the judges. If you can come please join everyone in the City
of Redlands for this parade next month.
Other events on the calendar include some new classes and a speaking engagement for a wildlife festival. I still have room for events during my Ventura County trip next month-and would love to do an Earth Day event. Pass the word!
As usual I am still booking events, and March is my lightest month
due to weather concerns-which is a good thing considering the predicted
storms and the snowfall we have received so far. Confirmed appearance
cities for this month include:
March (call for location & times) Puppy Preschool in the Big
Bear Valley, California.
March 27, 2004 (Saturday 3pm) Borders Books in La Habra, California
March 28, 2004 (Sunday 2pm) Borders Books in Glendale, California
Don't forget that I conduct events for business groups, service
groups, and as a fundraiser for animal related groups. A fee schedule
is available upon request. If you get a chance join me for one of
my behavior or animal career courses!

SAFARI TIME!
If you would like to join me on a real animal adventure-stay tuned.
Two trips are being planned now. One adventure will explore the
Costa Rican Rainforest and the other animal adventure will take
place in Africa! These trips will be outlined next issue. If enough
people enroll we can visit Costa Rica this fall, while the new Africa
trip is being planned for 2005.
=====================================================
My service called, Embracing Animals, Embracing Changes received
a warm reception and I had a great time after. CE (my bird) received
more attention from everyone as two church congregations followed
me to my truck to meet her and tell her how beautiful she was. I
swear she is going to get a big head.
CE's adventures this time included a rude awakening. This trip our sleeping arrangements were altered and she was not completely covered for the night when one of her kitty fans decided to get a close up sneak peak. CE, who was in deep sleep, woke up in what I am sure seemed like a living nightmare. Two golden eyes peered up at her from under the cover. Her response? To attack!
CE is a fruitloop sometimes, but she can also be aggressive and has a mean bite. Anyway, the cat darted off. Although I attempted to soothe CE-she decided we were all fair game for attack. Once I removed the cover and she completely woke up she realized everything was fine and that it was me, so she calmed down.
So, she was relocated to a higher table that just held her cage and provided no perching access to any other critter--and we completely covered the cage this time. Needless to say, CE remained on her best behavior the rest of that visit. It wasn't until we got to our next stop that she returned to her delinquent self. My comedian pal said CE was only on her best behavior because of her experience. I am sure she was right! CE is secure and safe and always near me, but that experience would have shook me up, too.
This week I am going to visit a delinquent zebra-should be entertaining.

This is an edited reposting of the February newsletter. My apologies
for duplicate emails.
January was a busy event filled month. For mountain residents it
was more like spring instead of winter. On the animal behavior side
of things, I saw more baby animals this month than normal-and the
bees started buzzing around much to early for my liking. Pray for
more snow in the mountains of southern California (or any type of
precipitation) as the forest is in dire need of help.
Thanks again to you as your help and continual support through
book sales, writing event participation, and referrals makes it
possible for me to continue my work.

JOURNAL INTERVIEW, MEDIA CALLS, FOREIGN DISTRIBUTION
What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons
of Wild and Tame Creatures is now available in the United Kingdom
and Canada.
After receiving a few fan emails, I learned that the Vancouver Sun did a half page article on the book. Shortly after, a reporter from a prominent news journal interviewed me about the book. There is no telling when the article will appear. I recently learned that the article idea, reporter name, and publisher all have to be kept under wraps or it jeopardizes the chance of publication.
Both Lifetime and Animal Planet television production companies have been courting me. Lifetime talked to me about appearing on one of their television series, and Dreamcatcher Films is doing a feature production on animals. I get about three inquiries a year from production companies, but two in a week is pretty unusual. Cross your fingers!
My appearance on Cox Cable in San Diego got pushed back into February. No final date yet, just a tentative.
Thanks for helping spread the word about the book! I now have a fan group in located in Hebron, Indiana. I talked to the one who started it all via a Nextel walkie-talkie. She got the book for Christmas and everyone she knows wants one. It was very fun to chat with her.

BOOK TOUR UPDATES
The bookstore tour is winding down. Bookstore appearances are really
a customer service effort. They take a lot of time and energy without
any financial compensation until sometime in the future (royalties).
However, I always have fun and never know where the appearances
will lead. This month I met a young girl named Fiona who has a small
menagerie at home. Her whole family came to the event and were some
of the last to leave.
Lately I have been booking speaking events, workshops, and other appearances. I'll be sticking close to home since February and March are heavy winter months and the winter road challenges can be horrible. My publisher and I are working at scheduling radio interviews for that time. Let me know if you have any we should target in your area.
Although I am still booking events, here are some of the confirmed
appearance cities for this month:
February 7-8, 2004 (Private Consulting) North County San Diego,
California
February 9, 2004 (Monday 6:30-9:30pm) Cat Behavior Seminar at The
Learning Annex of San Diego
February 10, 2004 (Tuesday 7:30) Book Discussion at the Bodhi Tree

REVIEWS STILL NEEDED
Thanks to author Kristin Johnson for her lovely review! It will
be appearing on myshelf.com in the near future. Her collaboration
project, Christmas Cookies Are For Giving is a lovely collection
of recipes and anecdotes. She dropped me a line to let me know about
a new writing course she is teaching in the Palm Springs area, too.
Congratulations!

-Find the time you are the most creative--or when you will be least
interrupted--and write.
-Wait to edit until you are done with the piece.
-Give yourself credit for your progress.
-Find someone you trust to give you feedback.

3. Animals:
=====================================================
Due to popular request here is an excerpt from my blog area:
ESCAPE FROM PUPPY PRISON
Puppy mayhem survivor talks about her escape.
When people tell me they want a puppy I always wonder if they have
lost their minds. After a week of puppy boot camp it always confirms
my theory--they definitely are insane. My other theory is that babies
of any type are so very cute and appealing so that they escape the
death threats of those people who become sleep deprived, tire of
struggling with house training issues, puncture wounds from puppy
teeth, and related traumas.
In this case, I am looking forward to escaping the Afghan puppy later today. I am sure he feels the same. Although it has only been five days, I'll treasure a sound sleep and days without constant supervision, cat rescues, and scolding naughty behavior while praising good choices and self-correction.
My escape is planned. During on of his later afternoon naps, I am going to make my escape. I am looking forward to getting work done in uninterrupted spurts longer than and hour or two...and the cherished mountain silence that signals peace instead of wonder about what the puppy delinquent is up to and the subsequent search for the critter.
This show-dog-to-be is doing well, but he is headstrong and persistent. He knows better than to bite, but tries to sneak. The phrase, "What did I just tell you?" is overused, but he stops, sighs with frustration just before he complies. Don't I understand that after all he is a puppy--why can't he bite who he wants when he wants? He is familiar with redirection, but sometimes the temptation is just too much.
Kashmir, the pup, is making good choices. He thinks about whether or not he wants to choose the right behavior that will glean him praise. Sometimes terrorizing the cat is just too much fun. Fortunately, the cats are veteran puppy preschool aids. They don't run and often bat his little bratty nose. When not willing to deal with his energetic overtures, they simply perch up high and watch in disdain--or ignore him entirely.
His crime of growling in protest gets him a time-out and he has decided that it is not a good choice. So why is it that I feel like I am the one in puppy prison? Probably because I don't see much daylight as I am the constant companion, chained to the pup by the leash when we do venture out, and a slave working to make sure his every need is met and that he is educated in the sophisticated world of human coexistence.
Soon it will be time to escape...

FIRE VICTIMS BENEFIT
Special thanks to Joe Markham of the Kong Company and Dr. Noy's
Toys for his generous donation of toys and related items for animal
fire victims of the San Bernardino Mountains. He donated three cases
of toys after receiving my request for help. He is one of my favorite
people in the pet industry and I have known him over eleven years
or so. He is as fabulous as the products his company produces.
Believe it or not, of all the humane agencies I called to offer
help, only one called me back. So, Mountain Humane gets the whole
lot! They are a rescue and fostering agencies that works from a
network of private homes. The grassroots projects are my favorite
as they put the money into their animal efforts instead of administrative
fees and promotion.

ARK ANIMAL SHIRTS: TAKE AN ARMCHAIR SAFARI
Special thanks must also go to children's author and illustrator,
Lee Fodi for his great artwork. Wizard Lee is a personal friend
who designed my press kit and the new t-shirt and sweatshirt logo
for my website promotion. We sell lots of animal books and provide
educational content about animals. You can take a preview from the
website and order your shirts from the index page at www.arkanimals.com!
Prices include tax, shipping and handling.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
May this New Year find you embarking on new adventures and innovative
directions filled with success and happiness.
The holiday season in the mountains was snow filled-and a bit insane.
Winter visitors are seasonal hazards, but we all survived the mania.
We continue our snow dances while praying for an end to this serious
draught.

3. Animals: The Tao of Meow
=====================================================
Lured to the home by the pleas of my biggest fan, a six-year-old
child, I walked into the small cabin expecting an entertaining evening.
A blur of black fur dashed toward my feet in a frantic attempt to
bolt through the door. The effort was futile.
Scooping her up, I gazed into the amber eyes of my wriggling captive.
This simple activity confirmed my suspicions. This hellion was simply
outgoing and energetic. You probably have met the type; she dashes
around non-stop and climbs everything. Nothing is sacred nor is
anything safe.
This mountaineer, named Sarah, views curtains, wood door frames,
pant legs or nylons the same-pathways to a summit. Her favorite
conquest is currently the center of the screen door. Claw sized
punctures have rendered the screen tattered and torn. Her favorite
position seems to be mid-screen with her limbs sprawled--stretched
to the limit of her reach. In addition, her leaps into the air,
or in the pursuit of a toy, rival that of any acrobat.
Sarah is not naughty by nature. Her biggest problems are that she
is highly intelligent, creative, and tenacious. My assessment: redirection
of all that talent is crucial.
As the mother of my young human apprentice laments, I envision
the picture she paints: Sarah the cat dashing quickly through the
rooms during the am and pm. (Cats secretly designate those time
periods as their official riot hours.) Sarah always eventually drops
to recharge her batteries--so she can begin again.
******
On my next visit I meet Ranger, a recent addition to the household.
Ranger received his name when he was rescued from the engine of
a Ford Ranger truck. I smirk as I flash upon the dark mysterious
character of the same name in the Stephanie Plum series (Janet Evanovich).
This kitty is alluring, too. He is dark, handsome, fit, and very
masculine in an unassuming way.
An introvert, he stealthy navigates around the perimeter of his
new dwelling; his movements cloaked by the strategic use of furniture
and the adornments of the household. He shies away from any unknown
humans and seldom gets into trouble. While Sarah is the yin, he
truly is the yang.
Fortunately, like most animals, he could not resist me. Soon he
was soliciting attention and it was time. So I called out to my
six-year-old human apprentice. She would begin her schooling at
the same time as her charges. What I take for granted had to be
explained and illustrated through technique. She mimicked me as
best as a child could.
The efforts were fruitful and the kitties came when called, stationed
away from the door, and learned what "off" and "no"
meant. Soon, they learned the benefits of making the right decision--and
the consequences of ignoring the rules
the dreaded squirt bottle
worked wonders.
On a recent visit both kitties were on their best behavior. The
yin and yang were in balance and harmony. Although inquisitive,
the creatures contained themselves so they were tolerable instead
of incorrigible. They remain playful and although they continue
to present some challenges at times, life has reached that balance
of what I call, the tao of meow.
